Abstract
A purpose-configurable submarine is disclosed comprising a surface hull and propulsion means. The propulsion means includes a surface engine compartment (20), at least one engine and a fuel system to hold and deliver fuel to the engine. The fuel system includes at least one variable displacement fuel cell (17). The submarine further includes a ballast system with at least one ballast compartment (2) and a passenger compartment (1). The passenger compartment (1) is mounted so that the majority of its volume is above the waterline when navigating on the surface.
