I et Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) - kommunikasjonsnett (150) som opererer via et felles medium, kreves en metode for å adressere og kontrollere tilgang mellom en sentral sender/- mottager (120) og et flertall sender/mottagere (130). En enhetsidentifiaksjon plasseres i Generic Flow Control (GFC) -feltet (400) i ATM-cellene (320) for å indikere at cellen (320) er ment for en gitt sender/mottager eller sender/mottagere i boligen. I den motsatte retning bruker sender/- mottagerne (130) i boligen GFC-feltet for å indikere at de forsøker å innregistrere seg på nettet. GFC-bitene settes tilbake til null før ATM-cellene overføres til ATM-behandlingslaget.
