Abstract

Et kulturmedium og en fremgangsmåte for erkjennelse av bakterier av Salmonella spp. fra andre gram-negative bakterier, særlig de som tilhører familien Enterobacteriaceae, er basert på evnen hos salmonellae til å bearbeide melibiose, mannitol og sorbitol til syrer. Denne egenskap anvendes sammen med et kromogent substrat som benyttes for å identifisere 13-galactosidase. Andre bakterier av familien Enterobacteriaceae, av hvilke de fleste er B-galactosidase- positive, kommer til syne som brune, blå eller grønne kolonier, avhengig av det benyttede, kromogene substrat. Bortsett fra Salmonella spp. kommer andre B-galactosidase-negative bakterier som Proteus spp. til syne som farveløse kolonier. Salmonellae kan identifiseres direkte på kulturmediet efter inkubering, på basis av den karakteristiske, lyserøde farve.
