Oppfinnelsen vedrører acarbose-biosyntesegenet fra actinomyceter, fortrinnsvis fra actinoplanes sp. SE 50/110 og mutanter derav, en fremgangsmåte for isolering av acarbose-biosyntesegener fra actionomyceter ved hjelp av en genprobe, som er blitt avledet fra høykonserverte proteinområder av kjente dTDP-glukose-dehydratase- enzymer, for oppnåelse av genet acbA (kodende for dTDP-glukosesyntase), acbB (kodende for dTDP-glukosedehydratase) og acbC (kodende for en cyklase, for eksempel identisk med AroB, bakterielle 3-dehydrokinasyresyntaser) eller en eller flere acarbose- biosyntesegener fra actinoplanes sp., samt anvendelse av acarbose, biosyntesegenet
