Abstract
For å beskytte karbonmaterialer ved høye temperaturer ved hvilke de ellers ville oksydere, beskyttes de ved påføring med børste en sol-gelforløper av silisium- karbid, hvilken forløper omdannes til silisiumkarbid på overflaten. Den påførte sol-gel inneholder tetraetoksysilisium, vann, HC1 og en fenolharpiks, som alle er oppløst i aceton. Solen kan også inneholde fyllstoff såsom karbonfiber, og silisiumkarbidbelegget kan ytterligere beskyttes ved hjelp av silisiumoksyd-aluminiumoksyd- litiumoksyd og/eller silisiumoksyd-titanoksydglass, påført ved hjelp av en sol-gel og smeltet in situ. Silisiumkarbid kan fremstilles direkte på denne måte.
