Det beskrives en fremgangsmåte for separering av vann og olje fra et slam som Inneholder vann, olje og faststoffer, hvilken fremgangsmåte omfatter 1) å bringe slammet 1 kontakt med en effektiv mengde av ett eller flere overflateaktlve midler valgt for dannelse av visse typer av mlkroemulsjoner med like volumerdeler av dekan og 3*-ig, vandig KaCl, 2) blande nevnte overflateaktlve midler og slam ved tilstrekkelig omrearing for å oppnå en Jevn blanding, 3) la nevnte blanding stå under tyngdekraftsavsetnlng eller sentrlfugerlng for å oppnå separering fra bunnsedimen- tet av en vandig fase som kan Inneholde oppl(zsellggjort olje med eller uten en ytterligere flytende oljefase, 4) dekantere separat oljen og vandige faser og 5) ytterligere behandle den vandige fasen med varme og/eller KaCl for å separere den oppltasellggjorte oljen eller ytterligere behandle bunnsedimentet med utvalgte overflateaktlve midler for å frigjiare vedhengende olje.
