Description
HAIR CONDITIONER COMPOSITION
FIELD
[0001] The present invention relates to hair conditioner compositions which are free from fatty alcohols and cationic and amphoteric surfactants commonly used in hair conditioners. The hair conditioner compositions according to the invention contain one or more cosmetically acceptable direct dye colorants for hair, at least one cationic polymer, at least one hair conditioning agent other than cationic polymer, at least one cosmetically acceptable solvent and optionally other cosmetically acceptable ingredients. The hair conditioner compositions typically contain cosmetically acceptable oils or extracts from Nordic plants as hair conditioning agents. The invention also relates to the use of the composition for the treatment or care of hair, for example in the form of temporary or semi-permanent hair conditioning and coloring compositions.
BACKGROUND
[0002] Hair conditioner compositions typically are white emulsions, which contain fatty alcohols for thickening and cationic surfactants for easy combing and manageability of hair. In addition, the fine and soft hair type, which is typical for Nordic people, also needs structure, airiness, as well as more volume. However, conventional hair conditioners, which contain fatty alcohols and cationic surfactants, may often easily flatten said hair type.
[0003] Moreover, Nordic hair often has a blonde color or it has been treated to emphasize the blonde color. If bleaching of hair is accomplished by a bleaching powder, undesired orange or yellow tone may appear in the hair. However, this problem may be overcome by coloring the hair with a direct dye colorant using complementary color technique, thus emphasizing the blonde color. For example, blue color produces clean, silvery color, if the hair has an excessive orange tone. Violet, on the other hand, breaks yellow color. Greyish hair may have a yellowish tone, but a direct dye colorant may bring out the original, pure silvery blonde tone.
[0004] Some attempts to prepare either fatty alcohol free or cationic surfactant free hair conditioning compositions have been made. EP 1504748 A1 relates to a gel type of hair conditioning composition comprising at least one cationic polymer but being free from fatty alcohols. Said conditioner composition further comprises at least one non-ionic, cationic and/or amphoteric surfactant as a solubilizer. The composition may optionally contain cationic direct dyes for coloring and/or color enhancing.
[0005] US 10426716 B2 discloses hair coloring compositions that employ divalent metal salts or inorganic acids, monovalent or divalent salts of organic acids and colorants. It is suggested that the composition may be free of cationic surfactants. Fatty alcohols are included in the compositions in cream form.
[0006] The hair conditioning composition disclosed in EP 256691 B1 is free of fatty alcohols but may contain cationic surfactants. The water-free and foamable compositions of CA 2776471 C are suggested to contain at most 0.4 weight% of fatty alcohols and surface active agents. The composition may further comprise a tetracycline antibiotic for treatment of various disorders of skin and mucous membranes.
[0007] US 2009041710 A1 relates to a hair conditioning composition comprising polyphenols and arylated silicones. A related publication, US 2009041702 A1, discloses a hair conditioning composition based on polyphenols, ubichinone and UV filters. US 2018168997 A1 relates to compositions for treating hair, wherein said compositions comprise cationic polymers and aminated silicones.
[0008] The aim of the present invention is to provide a novel hair conditioner, particularly for blonde hair, wherein the hair conditioner composition contains one or more direct dye colorants for coloring or toning of hair but is free of fatty alcohols and cationic and amphoteric surfactants. The novel hair conditioner is a clear, gel-type composition that provides hair with volume and structure while also toning the hair.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0009] The invention is defined by the features of the independent claims. Some specific embodiments are defined in the dependent claims.
[0010] The present invention is based on the finding of a novel hair conditioner composition for hair, particularly for blonde hair, which is free of fatty alcohols (longchain alcohols) and cationic and amphoteric surfactants.
[0011] According to a first aspect of the present invention, there is thus provided a hair conditioner composition, which comprises at least one cosmetically acceptable direct dye colorant, at least one cationic polymer, at least one hair conditioning agent other than cationic polymer, at least one cosmetically acceptable solvent, and optionally other cosmetically acceptable ingredients, and which is free of fatty alcohols and cationic and amphoteric surfactants.
[0012] According to a second aspect of the present invention, there is provided the use of the hair conditioner composition of the invention for treatment, care and coloring of hair, particularly blonde hair.
[0013] The hair conditioner composition of the invention is free of cationic and amphoteric (zwitterionic) surfactants, in particular quaternary ammonium compounds. The hair conditioner composition of the invention is also free of fatty alcohols or long-chain alcohols, typically fatty alcohols or long-chain alcohols having at least 6 carbon atoms, in particular cetyl or stearyl alcohols. In a preferred embodiment the hair conditioner composition of the invention comprises Nordic plant oils or extracts or both, preferably Nordic berry oils or extract or both.
[0014] Considerable advantages are obtained by the invention. The hair conditioner composition according to the invention combines toning of hair, particularly toning of blonde hair, as well as conditioning of hair, providing moisturizing effect as well as the volume and structure required of a fine or thin hair type. Combination of volume, structure and toning/breaking the color, in particular in blonde hair, as provided by the novel hair conditioner composition is not provided by the prior art products.
[0015] Second, when fine hair is provided with volume and tone, it looks more full, thus hiding signs of possible hair loss. This is an advantage particularly for elderly ladies having grey hair and suffering from hair loss since they prefer to have less yellowish hair without flatness.
[0016] Further features and advantages of the present technology will appear from the following description of some embodiments.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[0017] FIGURE 1 illustrates toning of an undesired yellow hair color to pure blonde hair color, using the hair conditioner composition of the invention.
EMBODIMENTS
[0018] It has been found that by combining the use of direct dye colorants, hair conditioning agents and cationic polymers it is possible to achieve hair conditioner compositions, which provide hair, particularly blonde hair, with the desired conditioning (more volume, more structure, more manageability), while also toning the hair and removing any undesired color. Moreover, the hair conditioner compositions are free of fatty alcohols and cationic and amphoteric surfactants.
[0019] Next embodiments will be described more closely with reference to the attached drawing and a detailed description.
[0020] FIGURE 1 illustrates toning of an undesired yellow hair color to pure blonde hair color, using the hair conditioner composition of the invention. It can be seen that the yellowish hair color that appears before treatment has been turned into a desired blonde color without yellow tone.
[0021] The hair conditioner composition of the invention does not contain fatty alcohols, i.e. the hair conditioner composition is free of fatty alcohols. Fatty alcohols or long-chain alcohols which are typically included in hair products include compounds such as cetyl alcohols and stearyl alcohols. However, the present hair conditioner composition is free of fatty alcohols or long-chain alcohols, typically fatty alcohols or long-chain alcohols having at least 6, preferably at least 10 carbon atoms. In particular, the present compositions are free of cetyl alcohols and stearyl alcohols.
[0022] The hair conditioner composition is also free of conventional cationic surfactants used in hair products. In particular, the hair conditioner composition of the invention is free of quaternary ammonium compounds. Quaternary ammonium compounds typically include compounds such as behentrimonium chloride, behentrimonium methosulfate, cetrimonium bromide, cetrimonium chloride, stearalkonium chloride, and dicetyldimonium chloride.
[0023] The hair conditioner composition is also free of conventional amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactants used in hair products. Amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactants in hair products typically include fatty acid amidoalkyl betaines, sulfobetaines and long-chain alkyl amino acids, such as lauryl hydroxyl sulfobetaine, cocoaminoacetate, cocoaminopropionate, cocoamidopropyl betaine and sodium cocoamphopropinate and -acetate.
[0024] The hair conditioner composition contains direct dye coloring agents or colorants selected from the group consisting of natural dyes and synthetic colors, preferably substances selected from the list of substances allowed for restricted use in hair coloring products given by the European Commission on March 27, 2017 (https://ec.europa.eu/docsroom/documents/22242). Examples of direct dye colorants suitable for the hair conditioner composition of the present invention include but are not limited to direct dyes, such as Acid Violet 43, Basic Red 51, Acid Red 52, HC Blue no 15, HC Blue no 2, and Basic Violet 2, typically Acid Violet 43.
[0025] The concentration of direct dye coloring agents is typically from 0.001 to 10%, preferably from 0.001 to 5% by weight, calculated by the weight of the total composition.
[0026] The hair conditioner composition of the invention contains cationic polymers but no conventional cationic surfactants used in hair products, in particular not any quaternary ammonium compounds.
[0027] Cationic polymers of the hair conditioner composition of the present invention are preferably selected from the group consisting of polycationic polymers, such as Polyquaternium compounds. Typical examples of those include but are not limited to Polyquaternium-10, Polyquaternium-22, Polyquaternium-37, and Polyquaternium-110.
[0028] Cosmetically acceptable polycationic polymers may typically have a thickening effect, hair volumizing effect, hair conditioning effect or any combination of these. Thickening effect is typically provided by Polyquaternium-37, while Polyquaternium-110 provides volume to the hair and Polyquaternium-22 and Polyquaternium-10 possess hair conditioning properties.
[0029] The combined concentration of cationic polymers in the hair conditioner composition may vary depending on for which purpose the cationic polymer is included in the composition. Thus the total concentration of cationic polymers in the composition of the invention may be 0.1 to 20%, preferably 0.1 to 15%, more preferably 0.5 to 10% or 0.5 to 15%, calculated by weight of the total composition.
[0030] “Thickening effect” may refer both to the effect on the composition and on the hair. Typically, the concentration of thickening agents or consistency agents is 0.01 to 10% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 5% by weight of the composition. The concentration of thickening agents may comprise polycationic polymers, typically polyquaternium compounds, such as Polyquaternium-37, but also other thickening agents, such as carbomers, xanthan gum, PEG derivatives and cellulose derivatives may be used as long as cationic and amphoteric surfactants and fatty alcohols are excluded.
[0031] On the other hand, the concentration of hair volumizing agents in the hair conditioner composition is 0.01 to 10% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 5% by weight, wherein the concentration of hair volumizing agents may completely or partly consist of cationic polymers, typically polyquaternium compounds, such as Polyquaternium-110.
[0032] As hair conditioning components the hair conditioner composition of the present invention may contain hair conditioning agents typically used in hair conditioning compositions. Preferably the hair conditioning agents are selected from the group consisting of cationic guar derivatives, silicones, cellulose derivatives, fatty acid esters, and Nordic plant oils and extracts, as long as fatty alcohols and cationic and amphoteric surfactants are excluded. In addition, the cationic polymers of the composition may provide a hair conditioning effect. In some embodiments, the use of silicones is avoided and the compositions of the invention are silicon-free. The hair conditioning agents may thus be selected from the group consisting of cationic guar derivatives, cellulose derivatives, fatty acid esters, Nordic plant oils and extracts, in particular Nordic berry oils and extracts. In a preferred embodiment, the hair conditioner compositions of the invention contains Nordic plant oils or extracts or both, preferably Nordic berry oils or extracts or both.
[0033] The concentration of hair conditioning agents in the composition of the invention is 0.1 to 10%, by weight, preferably from 0.1 to 5% by weight, calculated by weight of the total composition, the concentration of possible hair conditioning cationic polymers excluded.
[0034] The hair conditioner composition of the invention may also contain moisturizing agents or humectants. Moisturizing agents or humectants include for example glycerol, betaine, xylitol, saccharide isomerate, and birch sap (as such or in fermented form). The concentration of moisturizing agents or humectants is typically 0.1 to 5% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 3% by weight.
[0035] The hair conditioner composition according to the invention may also contain other than amphoteric (zwitterionic) solubilisants, such as PEG 40 hydrogenated castor oil and sorbitan oleate decylglucoside crosspolymer.
[0036] In a preferred embodiment, the hair conditioner composition of the invention contains Nordic plant oils or extracts or both as hair conditioning agents, preferably together with other hair conditioning agents, such as plant based proteins and vitamins.
[0037] In the present context, the term “Nordic plants” refers mainly to plants naturally growing in the Nordic area without agriculture or gardening. However, to ensure diversity of Nordic nature, sources of natural plant extracts and oils may also be cultured. The natural ingredients may thus be cultivated or wild harvested in compliance with national legislation.
[0038] The Nordic area refers to a geographical region in Northern Europe and the North Atlantic. Preferably, the “Nordic plants” referred herein include plants growing in the Nordic countries, which by definition include Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, as well as Greenland, the Faroe Islands, the Åland islands and Svalbard archipelagos. Typically, Nordic plants include Nordic berries, trees, shrubs, subshrubs, flowers, and mushrooms, including parts of said plants, such as leaves, roots, branches, and twigs. However, also some oleiferous plants and cereals such as canola and oat (canola oil, oat oil) are also included.
[0039] In a further preferred embodiment, the hair conditioner composition of the invention comprises Nordic berry oils or extracts or both as hair conditioning agents, preferably Nordic berry oils, in particular Nordic berry seed oils.
[0040] Nordic berries include but are not limited to Nordic berries selected from the group consisting of lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus), cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccus / Oxycoccus palustris), small cranberry (Vaccinium microcarpum), bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum), raspberry (Rubus idaeus), crowberry (Empetrum nigrum), rowanberry (Sorbus aucuparia, Sorbus fennica), sea buckthorn (Hippophaë rhamnoides), blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum), redcurrant (Ribes rubrum), white currant (Ribes rubrum f. leucocarpum), greencurrant (Ribes nigrum), gooseberry (Ribes uva-crispa), aronia berry (Aronia mitschurinii), saskatoon (Amelanchier alnifolia), Arctic bramble (Rubus arcticus), stone bramble (Rubus saxatilis), strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa), blackberry (Rubus fruticosus), bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), wild strawberry (Fragaria vesca) and juniper berry (Juniperus communis).
[0041] In a preferred embodiment, the Nordic berries are selected from the group consisting of cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccus / Oxycoccus palustris), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), bog bilberry (Vaccinium uliginosum) and crowberry (Empetrum nigrum), more preferably from cranberry and bilberry.
[0042] In an embodiment of the invention the hair conditioning agents comprise Nordic plant oils and extracts at a concentration of 0.1 to 5% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 3% by weight, calculated by weight of the total composition. In a further embodiment, the concentration of Nordic berry oils and extracts is 0.1 to 5% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 3% by weight, calculated by weight of the total composition. In a still further embodiment, the concentration of Nordic berry oils or extracts or both, preferably Nordic berry seed oils, is 0.1 to 5% by weight, preferably 0.1 to 3% by weight, calculated by weight of the total composition.
[0043] In some embodiments of the invention, the hair conditioning agents may comprise Nordic plant oils and extracts from Nordic trees, subshrubs, flowers or mushrooms. Nordic trees typically include but are not limited to pine (Pinus), particularly Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), birch (Betula), spruce (Picea), juniper (Juniperus communis), aspen (Populus tremula), alder (Alnus), and willow (Salix). Preferred Nordic trees include pine, birch, spruce, and juniper. In some embodiments, the hair conditioning agents may comprise juniper sprout extract, obtained by supercritical fluid extraction.
[0044] As an example of Nordic flowers from which oils or extracts suitable for the hair conditioner compositions of the invention can be obtained, rosebay willowherb (fireweed, Chamaenerion angustifolium) may be mentioned. An example of Nordic subshrubs is heather (Calluna vulgaris).
[0045] Nordic mushrooms include but are not limited to chaga mushroom (Inonotus obliquus) and bracket fungus or polypores (Ganoderma)
[0046] For cosmetic purposes, oils or extracts are typically obtained from plants by using supercritical fluid extraction, particularly supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, if only appropriate for the plant in question. Traditional solvent extraction methods are usually not applicable for the preparation of substances intended for cosmetic use, due to an insufficient degree of purity and the inclusion of solvent residues. However, “mild” oil extraction methods such as cold-pressing are acceptable for cosmetic purpose.
[0047] For example, several berry or berry seed oils and extracts are commercially available. Typically they are produced as follows: Berries or berry seeds are first dried, pressed as cakes and milled and then extracted with CO2. Also frozen berry pulp may be used. From this extraction the separated berry oil or berry seed oil is recovered, subjected to after-treatment and packed. The berry or berry seed extract is obtained by extracting the residue from the CO2 extraction process by using a solvent different from CO2. Alternatively, berry oils and berry seed oils and extracts may be obtained by cold-pressing.
[0048] In the preparation of the extracts it is possible to use for example water, ethanol, ethanol/water, butylene glycol, butylene glycol/water, glycerine or their mixtures as solvents in the extraction of the residual material. After the second extraction, any solids are separated from the extract. Before packaging the extract is subjected to microbial filtration. Microwave or ultrasonic extraction of Nordic plants and berries may also be used.
[0049] Nordic plant extracts and oils may provide the hair conditioner composition with hair conditioning properties. In particular Nordic berry oils, including Nordic berry seed oils, have hair conditioning properties and also contain protective antioxidants. Vinegar extracts and fermented extracts from Nordic plants contain sugars and minerals. Some berry oils and extracts contain coloring agents. In particular, the coloring agents of cranberry, bilberry, bog bilberry and crowberry, namely anthocyanins, provide a desired color (e.g. violet) within acidic pH range (pH 4-6), which is within the same pH range as the hair conditioner composition. Thus combining oils and extracts from berries in the hair conditioner composition, typically in an amount of 0.1-5% by weight of the composition, may provide an additional toning effect in the hair conditioner composition.
[0050] Examples of cosmetically acceptable solvents for the compositions of the invention include but are not limited to water and alcohols, wherein the alcohols are preferably selected from ethanol, isopropanol, pentylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerol and other plant origin derived glycols. Preferred solvents are water and plant origin derived ingredients like ethanol and glycerol. Occasionally a synthetic solvent like isopropanol may be needed.
[0051] The hair conditioner composition according to the invention may also comprise other ingredients selected from the group consisting of cosmetically acceptable oils, waxes and fats, preservative agents, perfume, chelating agents, pH adjusting agents, UV filters, opacifying agents, pearlescent agents, emulsifying agents, and antioxidants, as long as fatty alcohols or long-chain alcohols and cationic and amphoteric surfactants are excluded.
[0052] Typically, suitable pH adjusting agents are selected from citric acid, lactic acid, NaOH, TEA, AMP, dimethylglucamine and other cosmetically acceptable pH adjusting agents known to a person skilled in the art. The pH range of the hair conditioner compositions of the invention is typically from 3.5 to 6.5, preferably from 4 to 6.
[0053] One embodiment of the invention is a hair conditioner composition which comprises at least one cosmetically acceptable direct dye colorant at a concentration of 0.001 to 5% by weight; cationic polymers at a concentration of 0.1 to 15 % by weight; at least one hair conditioning agent other than cationic polymer; at least one cosmetically acceptable solvent; and optionally other cosmetically acceptable ingredients; wherein the hair conditioner composition is free of fatty alcohols and cationic and amphoteric surfactants, in particular it is free of fatty alcohols and quaternary ammonium compounds, and wherein the hair conditioner composition comprises Nordic plant oils and extracts at a concentration of 0.1 to 5% by weight, calculated by weight of the total composition.
