En karotenogen biosyntetisk genklynge er blitt isolert fra Pantoea stewartii stamme DC413, hvor den genetiske organiseringen av klyngen er crtE-idi-crtX-crtY-crtI-crtB-crtZ. Genene som finnes innen denne klyngen koder for geranylgeranyl pyrofosfat (GGPP) syntetase (CrtE), isopentenylpyrofosfat isomerase (Idi), zeaxantin glukosyl transferase (CrtX), lysopen syklase (CrtY), fytoen desaturase (CrtI), fytoen syntase (CrtB), og (-karoten hydroksylase (CrtZ). Genklyngen, genene og deres produkter er nyttige for omdannelsen av farnesyl pyrofosfat til karotenoider. Vektorer som inneholder disse DNA-segmenter, vertceller som inneholder vektorene og fremgangsmåter for å produsere disse enzymer ved rekombinant DNA teknologi i transformerte vertsorganismer blir utgreiet.
