Abstract

En fremgangsmåte for utbytting av ballastvann i et skips ballasttanker slipper inn sjøvann gjeimom en eller flere iimløpsporter i baugen av skipet mens skipet beveger seg gjeimom sjøen for å opprette et trykk som er større enn tiykket i ballastvannet som skal utbyttes, slik som målt ved bunnen av tankene. Det innkommende sjøvannet slippes inn i bunnpartiet av ballasttankene, og det fortrengte vannet tømmes i sjøen fra utiøpsporter lokalisert i et topparti av ballasttankene langs siden av skipet. Fremgangsmåten tillater den hyppige ombyttingen av ballastvann under transoseane reiser for å eliminere transport av marine organismer og forurensning som kan forårsake økologiske problemer når innført i geme farvann.
