Description
Foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører en ny fremgangsmåte for oksydasjon av hydrokarboner. Mer bestemt, foreliggende oppfinnelse vedrører katalytisk oksydasjon av et vidt spekter av oksyderbare hydrokarboner, spesielt alkaner, med luft eller oksygen. Katalysatoren er et halogenert ligandkompleks av forbindelser som inneholder et eller flere jern-kationer.
Oksydasjon av alkaner og andre alifatiske hydrokarboner katalysert av komplekser av overgangsmetaller i væskefase, er en velkjent metode og det er stor kommersiell utnyttelse av denne teknologien. Se for eksempel J. E. Lyons, Hvdrocarbon Processing. November 1980, 107 tabell I.
Det er allikevel ekstremt vanskelig å oppnå en selektiv partiell oksydasjon av ikke-aktiverte hydrokarboner som metan, etan, propan, butan og lignende, med luft eller oksygen som oksydasjonsmiddel. Bruk av makrosykliske metallkomplekser som for eksempel metallporfyriner som katalysatorer i væskefasen, har ikke gitt de ønskede resultater med hensyn til reaksjonshastighet og selektivitet under milde reaksjonsbetin-gelser, ved å benytte luft eller oksygen som oksydasjonsmiddel. En viss grad av suksess er oppnådd ved å benytte to mindre økonomisk ønskelige tilnærmelser : 1) Ved å benytte metallprofyrin-katalysatorer som for eksempel Fe(TPP)Cl og Mn(TPP)Cl (hvor "TPP" er det to-verdige anionet av 5, 10, 15, 20-tetrafenylporfin) med jodosylbenzen (jodbenzen ), natriumhypokloritt, alkylhydroperoksyder eller andre kostbare, ikke regenererbare oksydasjonsmidler.

2) Ved å benytte metallporfyrin-katalysatorer med molekylært oksygen som oksydasjonsmiddel og ved samtidig å tilsette reduksjonsmidler som for eksempel NaBH4, askorbinsyre eller kollodialt platina med H2. Også i dette tilfellet er de tilførte reaktantene kostbare og ikke-regenererbare. Eksempler på denne metoden kan finnes i D. Mansuy, M. Fontecave, and J. Bartoli, jL_ Chem. Soc. Chem. (1981) Hensikten med denne oppfinnelsen er derfor å kunne presentere en forbedret fremgangsmåte for oksydasjon av hydrokarboner og spesielt alkaner, med metall koordinasjonskompleks-katalysatorer, ved å benytte luft eller oksygen, men uten behovet for å tilsette kostbare, ikke-regenererbare oksydasjonsmidler, reduksjonsmidler eller andre ko-katalysatorer. I sammenheng med denne oppfinnelsen er det blitt funnet at hydrokarboner generelt og alkaner i særdeleshet, fortrinnsvis de hydrokarboner som har fra 1 til 20 karbonatomer og spesielt de hydrokarboner som har fra 1 til 10 karbonatomer, lett kan oksideres med luft og selektivt danne de korresponderende hydrokarbon oksydasjons-produktene, som for eksempel alkoholer og ketoner, med små mengder av estere, syrer og lignende, når katalysatorene er halogenerte koordinasjonskomplekser som inneholder et eller flere jern-kationer, som beskrevet senere. Mer spesielt er det blitt funnet at ved å halogenere ligand-systemene til disse koordinasjons-kompleksene som inneholder jern-kationer, kan man omdanne komplekser som ellers er katalytisk inaktive eller som har lav katalytisk aktivitet, til høyt aktive katalysatorer for selektiv oksydasjon av vanskelig oksyderbare alkaner til alkoholer, ketoner, blandinger av disse, med høyt utbytte og med liten dannelse av uønskede karbonoksyder. Bruk av disse katalysatorene ved oksydasjon av hydrokarboner, og spesielt alkaner, resulterer i en mengde uventede fordeler. Som beskrevet i en ikke avgjort søknad fra Ellis, et al, som omhandler azid-aktiverte ligandkomplekser av overgangsmetaller (S.N. 246), kan reaksjonen utføres ved lavere temperaturer enn tidligere, det er liten eller ingen oppsplitting av startmate-rialet, det er liten eller ingen dannelse av CO eller CO2, det er høyere selektivitet for alkoholer, når alkoholer er det
ønskede produktet, reaksjonshastigheten er generelt høyere enn for tidligere sammenlignbare fremgangsmåter og prosessene er mindre kostbare enn tidligere prosesser, som krevde sterke oksydasjonsmidler. I tillegg til dette vil allikevel den spesifikke bruk av jernkationet og den halogenerte ligand i katalysator- koordinasjonskomplekset resultere i forbausende høy katalytisk aktivitet og til og med høyere selektivitet for alkoholer, når alkoholer er det ønskede produktet, enn det som er funnet med andre kationer av overgangsmetaller eller med ikke halogenerte koordinasjonskomplekser med jern.
Fremgangsmåten i denne oppfinnelsen, som kan brukes for hydrokarboner med et hvilket som helst antall karbonatomer,
er spesielt fordelaktig for alkaner, som er kjent for å være vanskeligere å oksydere enn andre typer av hydrokarboner. Allikevel er det forstått at de tidligere nevnte katalysatorene også er meget effektive ved oksydasjon av andre typer hydrokarboner, spesielt de som inneholder substituenter som vil øke reaktiviteten til karbon-hydrogen bindingene med oksygen, såkalte "aktiverte hydrokarboner" som beskrevet senere.
Som tidligere nevnt, er denne fremgangsmåten spesielt effektiv ved oksydasjon av alkaner, inkludert sykloalkaner, substituerte alkaner og lignende. Alkanet som er utgangspunkt for fremgangsmåten kan inkludere rettkjedede og forgrenede forbindelser som har fra 1 til 20 karbonatomer, fortrinnsvis 1 til 10 karbonatomer, som for eksempel metan, etan, propan, n-butan, isobutan, n-pentan, n-hexan, 2-metylpentan, 3-metylpentan, heptan, 2-metylheptan, 3-metylheptan og lignende samt sykloalkaner som har fra 5 til 20 karbonatomer, fortrinnsvis fra 5 til 10 karbonatomer, som for eksempel syklopentan, sykloheksan, sykloheptan, syklooktan og lignende. Disse forbindelsene kan om ønskelig substitueres med forskjellige grupper selv om man bør vise forsiktighet ved å ekskludere substituenter som vil ha en motsatt effekt på katalysatorens aktivitet.
Når de forannevnte alkanene er oksidert ved hjelp av den fremgangsmåten denne oppfinnelsen beskriver, vil man få de korresponderende alkoholer, ketoner og lignende. Denne fremgangsmåteen er allikevel generelt anvendelig for en bred gruppe forbindelser som kan benyttes som for eksempel løsningsmidler, kjemiske mellomprodukter, bensintilsetninger og lignende.
Eksempler på aktiverte hydrokarboner som også kan oksyderes ved den fremgangsmåten som er inkludert i denne oppfinnelsen er forbindelser som for eksempel toluen, xylen, kumen, etylbenzen, difenylmetan, fluoren og lignende alkyl-substituerte aromater som har fra 7 til 20 karbonatomer og fortrinnsvis de som har fra 7 til 12 karbonatomer.
Inkludert er også olefinske hydrokarboner, spesielt de som inneholder allyliske karbon-hydrogen bindinger, som for eksempel propen, buten, sykloheksen og lignende. I tillegg, vil katalysatorene i denne fremgangsmåten i mange tilfeller kunnne oksydere olefinske dobbeltbindinger direkte og gi epoksyder, ketoner og alkoholer, som også er brukbare som løsningsmidler, kjemiske mellomprodukter og lignende. Olefinene har et ønskelig antall karbonatomer på fra 2 til 20 og fortrinnsvis fra 2 til 8 karbonatomer.
Denne fremgangsmåten er også brukbar for videre oksydasjon av partielt oksyderte hydrokarboner utenom organiske syrer, selvfølgelig. Generelt har disse partielt oksyderte hydrokarbonene fra 1 til 20 karbonatomer, de er altså tilsvarende de hydrokarbonene som er beskrevet tidligere, bortsett fra at de er partielt oksyderte.
Den foregående beskrivelsen av utgangsstoffene viser at denne fremgangsmåten er meget anvendelig for et bredt område av oksyderbare hydrokarboner, hvor oksydasjon av alkaner representerer det mest særegne ved denne oppfinnelsen.
Som tidligere nevnt, kan hydrokarbonene inneholde forskjellige substituenter så lenge disse ikke virker negativt inn på katalysatorens aktivitet.
Oksydasjonen, som kan gjøres på en generelt kjent måte, utføres fortrinnsvis i væskefase, selv om dette ikke er kritisk, ved å bruke organiske løsningsmidler, som for eksempel benzen, eddiksyre, acetonitrill, metylacetat eller lignende løsningsmidler som er inerte ved reaksjonsbetingel-sene, eller en ren løsning av hydrokarbonet dersom dette er en væske, ved et trykk på mellom 15 til 1500 psig, fortrinnsvis 15 til 750 psig, ved temperaturer på mellom 25 og 250 °C, fortrinnsvis 70 til 180°C. Avhengig av om hydrokarbonet som skal oksyderes er et fast stoff, væske eller gass, løses det i eller bobles gjennom løsningsmidlet sammen med luft eller oksygen, i nærvær av den tidligere nevnte jern-koordiha-sjonskompleks-katalysatoren for en tidsperiode som er tilskrekkelig for å få et utbytte av det ønskede oksyda-sjonsprodukt, generelt mellom 0.5 til 100 timer, fortrinnsvis fra 1 til 10 timer. "Jern" som er nevnt her, inkludererr både Fe(II) og Fe(III).
Valget av løsningsmiddel, selv om det ikke er kritisk, kan ha en effekt både på reaksjonshastigheten og den oppnådde selektivitet og dette bør derfor velges med omhu for å optimalisere de ønskede resultater. Det er blitt funnet at løsningsmidler som for eksempel acetonitril og eddiksyre ofte er effektive ved oksydasjon av alkaner for å danne oksygen-holdige produkter mens derimot reaksjoner som skjer i løsningsmidler som for eksempel metylacetat eller benzen vil skje langsommere. Det optimale løsningsmidlet kan bestemmes enkelt ved rutineforsøk.
Reaksjonshastigheten til forskjellige reaktanter kan variere sterkt og er ikke kritisk. For eksempel kan mengden av katalysator som benyttes variere fra 10-^ til 10"^ mol per mol hydrokarbon for alkaner, fortrinnsvis fra ca. 10~<5> til IQ- mol katalysator per mol hydrokarbon, selv om andre mengder ikke utelukkes. Mengden av oksygen relativ til hydrokarbonet som er utgangsstoff for reaksjonen kan også variere sterkt, generelt 10~<2> til 10<2> mol oksygen per mol hydrokarbon. Man bør imidlertid være forsiktig med dette forholdet, da enkelte oksygen/hydrokarbon-forhold vil ligge innenfor eksplosjonsgrensen. Som en gruppe, er katalysatorene nesten alltid løselige dersom man ikke bruker et stort overskudd. Som en regel kan man si at reaksjonene vanligvis skjer homogent.
Mange av katalysatorene som benyttes i denne fremgangsmåten er generelt kjente forbindelser, eller de kan forholdvis enkelt fremstilles med kjente metoder. Disse katalysatorene, som nevnt ovenfor, kan best defineres som jern-koordinasjonskomplekser og har følgende generelle struktur : hvor Fe er jern, A er et anion, komponent
er en
ligand hvor liganden er fra gruppen bestående av tetra-fenylporyrin, porfycener, porfener eller porfyriner og X er en halogensubstituent på liganden.
Det er kjent at halogenerte ligander øker stabiliteten til jern(III) og mangan(III) koordinasjonskompleksene ved oksidajson av alkaner og alkener med sterke oksydasjonsmidler ( C. Chang og F. Ebina, J. Chem. Soc. Chem. Com.. 778
(1981)), men det er ikke kjent ved oksydasjon av alkaner og alkener med luft eller oksygen.
Det er i tillegg og uventet observert økt katalysator-aktivitet som er karakteristisk for jern koordinasjonskomplekser hvor liganden er halogenert.
Halogenkomponenten, X, kan være fluor, klor, brom eller jod, men fortrinnsvis en av de tre førstnevnte og særskilt fluor. Graden av ligandhalogenering bør være tilstrekkelig til å øke katalysatorenes aktivitet, vanligvis må minst 15% av de utbyttbare hydrogenatomene i liganden byttes ut med halogen, fortrinnsvis minst 50% og og ønskelig mer enn 90%. Sistnevnte tilfelle refereres til som perhalogenering, hvor de anvendte symbolene er F~, Cl~. etc.
Katalysatorene som er beskrevet og anvendt er enten kjent eller kan forholdsvis enkelt fremstilles ved enkle modi-fikasjoner av prosedyrer beskrevet som for fremstilling av ikke-halogenerte ligander. For eksempel, kan det ikke-halogenerte Fe(TPP)Cl komplekset ( hvor "TPP" er tetrafenylporfyrinat) fremstilles ved en standard metode hvor (TPP)H2 og Fe(II)klorid blir refluksert sammen i en dimetylform-amidløsning. Oppkonsentrering skjer ved kromatografi. (Se A.S.Adler et al., J. Inora. Nucl. Chem..32. 2443 (1970).) Fra disse metallsaltene kan de korresponderende azidene fremstilles ved metatesereaksjoner med oppløst NaN3 eller hydrazonsyre.
For å fremstille de korresponderende halogenerte ligand koordinasjonskompleksene i denne oppfinnelsen, må et eller flere av forløperne til liganden halogeneres før selve liganden fremstilles ved en kondensasjonsreaksjon. Fluorinering av benzaldehyd etterfulgt av kondensasjon av pyrol gir (TPFP)H2 (hvor ("TPFP") kan være et eller flere mulige fluorineringsprodukter av TPP, fra monofluorinert til perfluorinert TPP). Ved å substituere (TPFP)H2 med (TPP)H2 i den tidligere nevnte metoden, eller ved refluksing i en dimetylformamidløsning som inneholder Fe(II)-saltet vil man få det korresponderende Fe(TPFP)-saltet, en av de halogenerte ligand koordinasjonskomplekskatalysatorene i denne oppfinnelsen.
Også Fe(BPI)0Ac (hvor "OAc" er acetat) kan fremstilles ved kondensasjon av 1,2-dicyanobenzen med 2-aminopyridin i nærvær av jernacetat. (Se W. 0. Siegl, J. Ora. Chem.. 42, 1872-78
(1977).) På lignende måte vi fluorinering av 1,2-dicyanobenzen etterfulgt av kondensasjon med 2-aminopyridin i nærvær av jernacetat gi den fluorinerte ligandanalogen til Fe(BPl)0Ac. Fra det foregående går det frem at disse katalysatorene består av tre hovedkomponenter : ligandgruppen, som er delvis eller fullstendig halogenert, jernsenteret som er bundet til
( dvs. kompleksert med) liganden og et anion, som er bundet til jernet. I noen tilfeller er u-dimerer passende katalysatorer og skulle derfor anses som ekvivalente. I disse u-dimerene er hvert av de to jernsenterne bundet til en eller flere aniongrupper.
Selv om effektiviteten til en spesiell katalysator kan være avhengig av det hydrokarbonet man starter med, vil valget av katalysator for oksydasjon av et bestemt hydrokarbon være forholdsvis enkelt å bestemme for en som er kjent med metoden. Eksempler på de katalysatorene som er mest foretruk-ket, spesielt for oksydasjon av lavere alkaner, inkluderer forbindelser som tetrakispentafluorfenylporfyrinatjern(III) azider, terkispentafluorfenylporfyrinatjern(III) klorid og lignende.
Fremgangsmåten i denne oppfinnelsen vil nå bli illustrert med de etterfølgende eksempler.
EKSEMPLER.
En serie forsøk ble utført hvor man varierte katalysatorene, alkanene, løsningsmidlene og forsøksbetingelsene, som vist i Tabell 1 og 2 sammen med de resulterende produkter.
Unntatt der hvor det i tabellene er angitt noe annet, ble forsøkene utført på følgende måte : alkanet ble løst i et passende løsningsmiddel som inneholdt katalysatoren og luft ble tilført til ønsket trykk. Oksydasjonen ble utført ved de angitte temperaturer i et tidsrom angitt i tabellene. Produktene i gass og væskefase ble analysert ved gass-kromatografi ("GC") og massespektrometri ("MS").
I de følgende eksempler er aktiviteten gitt som "katalysator omsetning", dvs. mol oksygen forbrukt pr. mol katalysator dersom ikke annet er angitt i tabellene. TBA og IPA er hhv. t-butyl og isopropylalkohol, TPP er tetrafenylporfyrinat, TPF.P er tetrakispentafluorfenylporfyrinat. Fra de foregående resultatene vist i tabell 1 og 2 vil man se at : 1) ikke-halogenerte koordinasjonskomplekser alene, gir i beste fall beskjeden aktivitet som vist ved kataly satorenes omsetning. (Eksempel 1, 3, 10, 13 i tabell 1 og eksempel 15, 17, 21, 23, 25, 27 i tabell 2);
2) halogenereing av liganden i jern koordinasjons-katalysatoren gir økt aktivitet (sammenlign eksempel 1 og 2, 3 og 5, 7 og 8 i tabell 1 og eksempel 15 og 16, 17 og 19 i tabell 2), men har liten eller ingen effekt hvor metallet er et annet typisk overgangsmetall som f.eks. mangan (sammelign 10 og 11 i tabell 1 og eksempel 21 og 22,23 og 24 i tabell 2) eller krom ( sammenlign eksempel 13 og 14 i tabell 1 og eksempel 25 og 26, 27 og 28 i tabell 2) ( legg merke til at alle reaksjoner som resulterer i en
katalysator omsetning på mindre enn 100 pr. time er av begrenset verdi).
3) selektiviteten til alkoholdannelse (IPA eller TBA) er
økt ( IPA/Aceton forhold over 1.0 i tabell 1 er uvanlig; se også note (d) til tabell 2).
Claims (2)
1. Fremgangsmåte ved oksydasjon av hydrokarboner med 1-20 karbonatomer med luft eller oksygen i nærvær av en jern-holdig koordinasj onskbmplekskatalysator, karakterisert ved at som katalysator anvendes en halogenert koordinasjonskomplekskatalysator med formelen
hvor Fe er jern, A er et anion, komponent
er en ligand hvor liganden er fra gruppen bestående av tetrafenyl-porfyrin, porfycener, porfener eller porfyriner og X er en halogensubstituent på liganden.
2. Fremgangsmåte i følge krav 1, karakterisert ved at som halogenert katalysator anvendes en som er halogenert med fluor, brom eller klor, fortrinnsvis fluor.
