Abstract

Isolation of resorcinol (I) from reaction mixts. is carried out by (a) treating the reaction mixt. (or a crude (I)-contg. fraction isolated from such a mixt., opt. in a water-immiscible solvent) with H2O or aq. alkali; (b) extracting the aq. phase with an organic solvent, opt. aftere neutralising any alkali; and (c) recovering (I) from the organic extract. The process is esp. applicable to reaction mixts. formed during the prodn. of (I) from delta -keto carboxylate esters. It avoids the losses of (I) associated with fractional distn. of such mixts.
