Abstract
Steel is pickled by first contacting with a suitable acid to which FeCl3 has been added. The steel is placed successively in a series of communicating baths of increasing concn. The bath is then regenerated by removal of ferrous and ferric salts resulting from the pickling treatment and adding in FeCl3 to the bath. The FeCl3 added in the liq. state at a rate of 150-200 l FeCl3/1000 l of acid/FeCl3 mixt., the acid pref. being 5-20% HCl. The bath is kept at 75-90 degrees C during pickling. The pickling time is =3mins. No mechanical treatment to remove scale before pickling is required. Special steels can be pickled in the same baths as or dinary steels without expensive plant.
