Abstract

In a process for the decarboxylative oxidn. of a benzene monocarboxylic acid (or a salt, ester or anhydride of this) in the liq. phase at elevated temp. with an O2-contg. gas, the tarry prod. formed is subjected to a hydrogenation treatment. Pref. the hydrogenation is carried out at 400-1200 degrees C (200-500 degrees C) in presence of a hydrogenation catalyst e.g. contg. 10-20wt.% NiO, 50-90wt.% MoO3 and 5-10wt.% CoO. The process is esp. useful for treating the tarry residues obtd. after the oxidative decarboxylation of benzene monocarboxylic acids (benzoic acids (benzoic acid, toluic acid, nitrobenzoic acids, etc) into the corresponding phenols. After recovery if the phenols, a tarry deposit remains which usually contains residues of Cu catalysts used to make the original carboxylic acid. Previously, these tarry deposits have been burnt, but this causes loss of prod. and pollution of the atmosphere with CuO. In the present process, these deposits are now converted into useful prods. Thus hydrogenation of the tarry deposit resulting from the oxidn. of benzoic acid into phenol gives a mixt. of cyclohexanone and/or cyclohexanol which can be recovered and purified.
