Abstract

1477803 Feeding pipes K L LAUTERJUNG and K HOFFMAN 17 Jan 1975 [19 Jan 1974] 2175/75 Heading A5R A feeding pipe 1 to be inserted into the gastro-intestinal tract of a body to be fed is provided at its leading end with a balloon 2 which can contain liquid to act as a weight to assist in the insertion of the pipe, the device being so arranged that the liquid may be discharged from the balloon into the body after the insertion has been completed. In a first embodiment Fig. 1 this is achieved by means of sets of self-closing slit valves V1, V2. The valves V2 open on application of suction to the interior of the tube and allow the liquid to drain out of the balloon into the tube interior. The valves V1 open on application of pressure to the interior of the tube and allow discharge of the liquid into the body and also passage of liquid food. In a second embodiment, Fig. 5, the balloon terminates in a discharge nozzle 15 with openings 16 which are arranged, during insertion of the pipe, to be sealed in a pocket 17 in the outer surface of the balloon. This pocket may be formed by forcing part of the balloon wall into the leading end of the pipe. Either of the feeding pipes described may be used with a pump (Fig. 7 not shown) which may incorporate rollers which succesively roll along and squeeze the pipe to force the nutrient along the pipe.
