Abstract

The ventilator is for mounting on the roof of a building such as a factory, having a vertical clue with a rectangular top opening, closed by a hinged cover opened against spring action by a pneumatic ram, also other springs, inoperative when there is no fire, which automatically open the cover when fire occurs in the absence of a compressed-air supply to the cam. The hinge of the cover is so arranged as to leave an appreciable air gap between it and the vertical flue wall, so that when the cover is up a cooling air stream passes through the gap onto the inside of it. The ram pivot pin works in grooves in a tilting piece in turn hinged parallel to the pin to the flue wall, and locked by devices released by controls, or mechanisms reacting to temperature or smoke. In the roughly vertical locked position of the tilting piece the ram pivot pin is below the piece hinge axis and at the lower ends of the grooves.
