Abstract

Aromatic aldehydes and carboxylic acids are prepd. by hydrolysing aromatic dichloromethyl and/or trichloromethyl cpds. in presence of 0.5-20 mmoles of a Zn salt per equiv. of Cl2HC- or Cl3C- gps. at 50-180 degrees C. with addn. of stoichiometric amts. of water as it is consumed. Resinification of aldehydes does not occur; the danger of explosive decompsn. of benzyl chloride is avoided; pre-inactivation of the catalyst is not needed and hydrolysis is rapid, but can be opt. slowed by water slower addn. Even benzal chlorides substd. in both o-positions to the Cl2HC- gp. can be hydrolysed without drastic treatment.
