Abstract

Drinking water supply is sterilised by using chlorine, together with bromine and/or iodine in the proportion of between 10% to 50% of the chlorine employed; the residual halogen concentration should be about the same as when chlorine only is used. The additional halogen overcomes the danger of unpleasant choramines being present in the drinking water. Typical treatment uses a combination of 0.1 to 0.3 ppm of bromine together with 0.3 to 0.5 ppm of chlorine.
