Thermohardende poedercoati ngsamenstel1i ng
De uitvinding heeft betrekking op een thermohardende poedercoatingsamenstel!ing omvattend een mengsel van met elkaar 5 reactieve deeltjes en een katalysator.
Thermohardende poedercoatingsamenstellingen die een mengsel van met elkaar reactieve deeltjes omvatten, zijn algemeen bekend. De meeste poedercoatings zijn ten minste voor een deel gebaseerd op de jq toepassing van een epoxyhars als verknopingsmiddel. Als voorbeeld kan verwezen worden naar US-A-4 147 737. Het daarin beschreven bindmiddel omvat een mengsel bestaande uit 4-25 gew.% van een polyepoxyhars met gemiddeld ten minste twee epoxygroepen per molecuul, en 75-96 gew.% van een vast gemodificeerd polyesterhars met een zuurgetal van 30 tot 100 en een verwekingstemperatuur tussen 60 en 130°C. Als epoxyhars wordt bij voorkeur gebruik gemaakt van trisglycidyl isocyanuraat (TGIC). De poedercoating kan verder een katalysator en desgewenst nog een extra verknopingsmiddel bevatten.
2Q Een bezwaar van de bekende poedercoati ngs is dat het gebruik van epoxyharsen, waartoe het veel gebruikte triglycidylisocyanuraat (TGIC) behoort, toxicologisch verdacht is. Een verder bezwaar is dat voor toepassing in poedercoatings slechts een klein deel van de commercieel verkrijgbare epoxyverbindingen in aanmerking komt, met 22 name die in een vaste vorm. De meeste epoxyverbindingen zijn daarentegen vloeibaar en resulteren voor de bedoelde toepassing in een onvoldoende poederopslagstabiliteit.
Door de uitvinding wordt thans voorzien in een thermohardende 3q poedercoatingsamenstel1ing met een verknopingsmiddel dat niet of nagenoeg niet toxisch of mutageen is en verder leidt tot een betere poederopslagstabi1iteit.

De uitvinding bestaat hieruit dat bij een thermohardende poedercoatingsamenstelling van het in de aanhef genoemde bekende type een deel van de reactieve deeltjes een polymeer met met epoxy 5 ester- en/of ethervormende groepen omvat en een ander deel een 2-oxo-l,3-dioxolan-4-yl-, hierna cyclocarbonaat- en eventueel epoxygroepen bevattend verknopingsmiddel met een functionaliteit groter dan 1.

Er zij opgemerkt dat de toepassing van cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattende verbindingen in thermohardende coatings reeds eerder is 30 voorgesteld in JP-A-04161 424.
In deze octrooipublikatie is uitsluitend sprake van coatings die vanuit een oplosmiddel worden aangebracht. Over de toepassing in poedercoatings wordt in het geheel niet gesproken. Weliswaar zijn 1 0 0 2 0 0 8 3 cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattende verknopingsmiddelen reeds eerder aanbevolen in poedercoatings. Het betreft dan echter steeds in combinatie met reactieve polymeren met primaire aminogroepen die met cyclocarbonaatgroepen een adduct (urethaan) vormen zonder vorming c van bijprodukten. Daarentegen gaat de uitharding van de onderhavige

poedercoatingsamenstel1ingen steeds gepaard met uittreding van CO2 onder vorming van epoxygroepen die vervolgens met de reactieve groepen in het polymeer een reactie aangaan onder vorming van ester-en/of ethergroepen. Het is dan ook buitengewoon verrassend dat bij uitharding van de onderhavige poedercoatingsamenstel1ingen geen of nauwelijks problemen optreden door de vorming van CO2 blaasjes die de oorzaak kunnen vormen van een ongelijkmatige coatinglaag.
Voor het bereiken van een bevredigende coatinglaag is het noodzakelijk dat in de poedercoatingsamenstel1ingen volgens de uitvinding een katalysator is opgenomen. De daarvan op te nemen hoeveelheid bedraagt gewoonlijk ten minste 0,01 en ten hoogste 10 gew.% berekend op het mengsel van met elkaar reactieve deeltjes. Bij toepassing van minder dan 0,01 gewichtsdelen katalysator op 100 20 gewichtsdelen van het mengsel vindt deblokkering bij zodanig hoge temperatuur plaats dat de vrijgekomen epoxygroepen vrijwel onmiddellijk met de reactieve groepen in het polymeer reageren met als mogelijk gevaar dat het gevormde CO2 slechts voor een deel kan ontwijken en de gevormde coating een gerimpeld oppervlak vertoont. _c Toepassing van meer dan 10 gewichtsdelen katalysator kan ten koste

gaan van de opslagstabiliteit van de poedercoating. Verder kan een dergelijk grote hoeveelheid katalysator van invloed zijn op de uiteindelijke kwaliteit van de coating.
Gebleken is dat de beste resultaten in het algemeen worden verkregen wanneer de als ringopener voor de cyclocarbonaatgroep gebruikte katalysator aanwezig is in een hoeveelheid van 0,1 tot 5 gew. delen op 100 gew. delen van het mengsel van met elkaar reactieve deeltjes.

Voorbeelden van geschikte katalysatoren voor de decarboxyleringsreactie zijn zure katalysatoren zoals fosfonzuur, p-tolueensulfonzuur en dimethyl sulfonzuur; en carbonaten zoals calciumcarbonaat en degelijke. De voorkeur gaat evenwel uit naar de 5 toepassing van ammonium- en/of fosfoniumzouten. Als voorbeelden kunnen genoemd worden quaternaire ammoniumzouten zoals tetramethylammoni umbromi de, tri methyl benzylammoni umhydroxi de, 2-hydroxypyridine, trimethyl benzylammoniummethoxide, fenyltrimethylammoni umchlori de, fenyltrimethylammoni umbromi de, jq fenyltri methylammoni umhydroxi de, fenyltrimethylammoni umi odi de, fenyltrimethylammoniumtribromide, het natriumzout van fosfocholinechloride, stearylammoniumbromide, tetra-n-amylammoni umjodi de, tetra-n-butylammoni umbromi de, tetra-n-butylammoni umhydroxi de, tetra-n-butylammoni umfosfaat, ._ tetra-n-decylammoniumtrichloride, tetraethylammoniumhydroxide, lb tetraethylammoniumtetraf1uoroboraat, acetylcholinebromi de, alkyldimethylbenzylammoniumchloride, benzylcholinebromide, benzyl-n-butylammoni umbromi de, bis -(tetra-n-butylammoni urn)di chromaat en tri methyl vinylammoniumbromide; fosfoniumzouten, zoals 2q allyltri fenylfosfoni umchlori de, benzyl tri fenylfosfoni umchlori de, broommethyltri fenylfosfoni umbromi de, 2-dimethylami noethyltri fenylfosfoni umbromi de, ethoxycarbonylfosfoni umbromi de, n-heptyltri fenylfosfoni umbromi de, methy1trifeny1fosfoniumbromide, 25 tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)fosfoniumsulfaat en tetrafenylfosfoniumbromide.
In de onderhavige poedercoatingsamenstellingen zijn de cyclocarbonaatgroepen steeds aanwezig in de hoedanigheid van met CO2 2Q geblokkeerde (latente) epoxygroepen. Na uitharding ontstaan dan ook dezelfde eindgroepen als die welke worden verkregen wanneer van uitsluitend epoxygroepen bevattende verknopingsmiddelen zou zijn uitgegaan. De toepassing van epoxygroepen bevattende 10 0 2 0 0 8 5 verknopingsmiddelen in poedercoatings is algemeen bekend. Oe daarmee verkregen coatings bezitten in het algemeen zeer goede eigenschappen. Alhoewel bij de ontleding van de cyclocarbonaatgroepen in de thans voorgestelde 5 coatingsamenstellingen C0£ vrijkomt, wordt in tegenstelling tot het geval is bij poedercoatings met geblokkeerde isocyanaten als verknopingsmiddel geen bijdrage geleverd aan het VOC (volatile organic compounds).
Verknopingsmiddelen waarvan de functionele groepen vrijwel uitsluitend uit cyclocarbonaatgroepen bestaan, smelten in het algemeen hoger dan verknopingsmiddelen van vergelijkbare samenstelling waarvan de functionele groepen vrijwel uitsluitend worden gevormd door epoxygroepen. Dit opent in een aantal gevallen de mogelijkheid om de fysische eigenschappen zoals het smeltpunt te beïnvloeden door toepassing van een verknopingsmiddel waarin slechts een deel van de epoxygroepen is vervangen door cyclocarbonaatgroepen of omgekeerd. Daarbij kunnen in één verbinding zowel cyclocarbonaat-als epoxygroepen aanwezig zijn. Ter verkrijging van een redelijk 2Q smeltpuntverhogend effect dient ten minste 10% van de functionele groepen in het verknopingsmiddel te bestaan uit cyclocarbonaatgroepen. De rest bestaat dan uit ongeblokkeerde epoxygroepen. Het is echter ook mogelijk om een mengsel toe te passen van twee verknopingsmiddelen, waarbij in één verbinding de functionele groepen vrijwel uitsluitend uit cyclocarbonaatgroepen bestaan, terwijl in de andere verbinding de functionele groepen vrijwel uitsluitend uit epoxygroepen bestaan. Het is gebleken dat in het algemeen de beste resultaten worden verkregen wanneer ten minste 50% van de functionele groepen wordt ingenomen door cyclocarbonaatgroepen en de rest door epoxygroepen.
De hoeveelheid verknopingsmiddel berekend op de combinatie van het met epoxygroepen reactieve polymeer en verknopingsmiddel zal in het 1002008 6 algemeen niet meer bedragen dan 50 gew.%. De minimale daarvan op te nemen hoeveelheid ligt gewoonlijk boven de 5 gew.%. Daarbij gaat de voorkeur uit naar een hoeveelheid die is gelegen tussen 10 en 30 gew.%.

De hoeveelheid epoxy zuurstof in het verknopingsmiddel na deblokkering van CO2 komt gewoonlijk overeen met een hoeveelheid van ten minste 0,4 gew.%, waarbij de voorkeur uitgaat naar een hoeveelheid epoxy zuurstof van meer dan 1 gew.%. Optimale resultaten worden gewoonlijk verkregen bij toepassing van meer dan 2 gew.% epoxy zuurstof in het verknopingsmiddel. De hoeveelheid epoxy zuurstof zal in het algemeen een hoeveelheid van 20 gew.% niet te boven gaan.
De bereiding van cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattende

verknopingsmiddel en is algemeen bekend. Zo is in DE-C-41 29 752 een werkwijze beschreven voor de omzetting van epoxygroepen in een polyepoxide met behulp van een laagmoleculair 2-oxo-l,3-dioxolaan in aanwezigheid van een basische katalysator bij een temperatuur tussen 2Q 55 en 170°C en een mol ai re verhouding van epoxide tot dioxolaan tussen 10:1 en 1:20. Een andere methode zoals beschreven door
Rokicki e.m. in J. of Appl. Pol. Sci., 41, 647-659 (1990) gaat uit van de epoxyverbinding die in aanwezigheid van 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecaan (18-kroon-6-ether) en 25 kaliumjodide met CO2 bij een druk van ongeveer 30 atmosfeer wordt omgezet in het overeenkomstige cyclocarbonaat.
Tenslotte kan gewezen worden op een werkwijze als beschreven door Kihara e.m. in Macromolecules 25, pp. 4824-4825 (1992), waarin de epoxyverbinding bij atmosferische druk met CO2 wordt omgezet in 2Q aanwezigheid van natriumjodide en eventueel trifenylfosfine als katalysator. Een andere aantrekkelijke bereidingswijze bestaat hierin dat wordt uitgegaan van een laagmoleculair hydroxyfunctioneel cyclocarbonaat en een ten minste bifunctionele verbinding met met 10 0 2 0 0 8 7 hydroxyl groepen reactieve groepen. Diverse ten minste bifunctionele verbindingen komen in aanmerking om met het hydroxyfunctioneel cyclocarbonaat een reactie aan te gaan. Zo kan het hydroxyfunctioneel cyclocarbonaat worden gecondenseerd met een g dibroomalkaan of dichlooralkaan onder vorming van een dicyclocarbonaat dat direct kan worden ingezet als verknopingsmiddel. Nucleofiele vervanging van een allylhalogenide of vinyl benzyl halogenide door condensatie met een hydroxyfunctioneel cyclocarbonaat levert cyclocarbonaten op met ethylenisch onverzadigde groepen. Verdere condensatie van deze twee sleutel verbindingen met een si laan met Si-H bindingen resulteert in silicon bevattende (multifunctionele) cyclocarbonaat monomeren. De voorkeur gaat echter uit naar een poedercoatingsamenstel 1 ing waarin een deel van de reactieve deeltjes is verkregen door omzetting van 1C een hydroxyfunctioneel cyclocarbonaat met een polyisocyanaat. Zo kan glycerolcarbonaat worden verkregen door omzetting van glycerol met ethyleencarbonaat zoals beschreven in US-A-2 915 529.
Het molecuul gewicht (Mn) van het cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattend 2q verknopingsmiddel is gelegen tussen 200 en 7000 en bij voorkeur tussen 300 en 2000. van Bayer), het adduct van 1 molecuul trimethylolpropaan en 3 moleculen isophorondiisocyanaat, verbindingen zoals 1.3.5- triisocyanatobenzeen en 2,4,6-triisocyanatotolueen, en het adduct van 1 molecuul pentaerythritol en 4 moleculen 25 tolueendiisocyanaat. Bij voorkeur wordt een alifatisch of cycloalifatisch di- of triisocyanaat met 8-36 koolstofatomen toegepast of een isocyanuraat van de hiervoor genoemde di isocyanaten.
2Q Di- of polyisocyanaten met een hoger molecuul gewicht kunnen worden verkregen door reactie van een lager moleculair polyisocyanaat met een hydroxy- of aminofunctionele verbinding. Geschikte aminofunctionele verbindingen zijn onder meer alifatische of 10 0 2 0 0 8 9 cycloalifatische aminen met ten minste 1, bij voorkeur 2 tot 4, primaire aminogroepen. Voorbeelden van geschikte aminoverbindingen zijn onder meer ethyleendiamine, propyleendiamine, ethanol amine, propanol amine, 5 butyleendiamine, pentamethyleendiamine, hexamethyleendiamine, decamethyleendiamine, 4,7-dioxadecaan-l,10-diamine, dodecamethyleendiamine, 4,9-dioxadodecaan, 1,12-diamine, 7-methyl-4,10-di oxatri decaan-1,13-di ami ne, 1,2-di ami nocyclohexaan, 1,4-di ami nocyclohexaan, 4,41-di ami nocyclohexylmethaan, jq isophorondiamine, bis-(3-methyl-4-aminocyclohexyl)methaan, 2,2-bis-(4-aminocyclohexyl)propaan, nitri 1 tris(ethaanamine), polyetherpolyaminen, bijvoorbeeld die welke bekend zijn onder het handelsmerk Jeffamine® van Huntsman, bis-(3-aminopropyl)methylamine, 3-ami no-1-(methyl ami no)propaan, 3-ami no-1-(cyclohexylami no)propaan, 1C N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethyleendiamine en polyaminen met de formule lb H2N-(R2-NH)n-Ri-NH2, waarin de groep R^ en de n groepen R£, onafhankelijk van elkaar gekozen, een alkyleengroep met 2-6 en bij voorkeur 2-4 koolstofatomen voorstellen en n een getal van 1-6 en bij voorkeur 1-3 is. Onder een alkyleengroep wordt hier tevens 2q verstaan een cycloalkyleengroep of een alkyleengroep met een ether-zuurstofatoom. Representatieve polyalkyleenpolyaminen zijn onder meer diethyleentriamine, dipropyleentriamine en dibutyleentriamine. Bij voorkeur is de aminoverbinding cycloalifatisch van aard en bezit 5-15 koolstofatomen, zoals isophorondiamine, 25 4’4' -dicyclohexylmethaandiamine en 3,31-dimethyl-4,4'-dicyclohexylmethaandiamine.
Geschikte hydroxyfunctionele verbindingen zijn onder meer alifatische of cycloalifatische polyolen met ten minste 1, bij 2q voorkeur 2 tot 4, hydroxyl groepen. Voorbeelden van geschikte hydroxyl verbindingen zijn onder meer ethyleenglycol, propyleenglycol, diethyleenglycol, tetramethyleendiol, neopentylglycol, hexamethyleendiol, 100 2 0 08 10 cyclohexaandiol, bis-(4-hydroxycyclohexy1 )methaan, glycerol, trimethylolethaan, trimethylolpropaan, tris(2-hydroxyethyl)isocyanuraat en pentaerythritol. Geschikte hydroxyfunctionele polyolen en andere geschikte hydroxyl verbindingen 5 zoals polyesterdi- en polyolen en polyetherdi- en polyolen zijn onder meer beschreven in Lackkunstharze door H. Wagner en H.F. Sarx, 5e druk, 1971 (Carl Hanser Verlag, München).
Geschikte hydroxyfunctionele polyesters hebben een hydroxyl getal tussen 5 en 200 mg KOH/g, een zuurgetal < 10 mg KOH/g en een jq gemiddelde functionaliteit van ten minste 2. De polyesters kunnen kristallijn zijn, alhoewel amorfe polyesters de voorkeur verdienen. Mengsels van amorfe en kristallijne polyesters komen eveneens in aanmerking. Zij kunnen langs de gebruikelijk weg worden verkregen door verestering of omestering, desgewenst in aanwezigheid van een katalysator zoals dibutyltinoxide of tetrabutyltitanaat, van polycarbonzuren zoals adipinezuur, sebacinezuur, ftaalzuur, isoftaalzuur, tereftaalzuur, pyromelliethzuur, trimelliethzuur, 3,6-dichloorftaalzuur, tetrachloorftaalzuur, of de anhydriden of estervormende equivalenten daarvan met alifatische diolen, zoals 2q ethyleenglycol, propaan-l,2-diol, butaan-l,2-diol, butaan-l,4-diol, butaan-l,3-diol, 2,2-dimethylpropaandiol-l,3 (neopentylglycol), hexaan-2,5-diol, hexaan-l,6-diol, 1,4-dimethylolcyclohexaan, 2,2-[bis-(4-hydrocyclohexyl)]-propaan, diethyleenglycol, dipropyleenglycol, en 2,2-bis-[4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)]-fenylpropaan en 25 kleinere hoeveelheden van polyolen, zoals glycerol, hexaantriol, sorbitol, pen-taerythritol, trimethylolpropaan, en tris(2-hydroxyethyl)isocyanuraat. Verder kunnen nog vetzuren worden opgenomen afkomstig van lijnzaadolie en sojaolie.
2q Geschikte polyolpolyurethanen zijn afgeleid van een of meer van de hiervoor genoemde alifatische, cycloalifatische of aromatische di-, tri- of tetraisocyanaten die al dan niet alkenisch onverzadigd kunnen zijn en een of meer van de hiervoor genoemde 1002008 11 hydroxyl verbindingen. Andere polyhydroxyl verbindingen die in aanmerking komen om te worden omgezet met een polyisocyanaat tot een polyurethaan met vrije isocyanaatgroepen zijn afgeleid van polyhydroxyalkyl(meth)acrylaat zoals polyhydroxyethyl(meth)acrylaat 5 en polyhydroxypropyl(meth)acryl aat. Geschikte methacrylaatpolyolen worden geleverd door Goldschmidt (Duitsland). In deze (meth)acrylaat polymeren kunnen verder nog comonomeren zijn opgenomen zoals styreen, etheen, propeen, allyl en acrylonitril.
Bij de bereiding van de polyolurethanen met isocyanaateindgroepen gaat men gewoonlijk als volgt te werk. De molequivalentverhouding van het aantal hydroxyl groepen tot isocyanaatgroepen wordt gewoonlijk gekozen tussen 0,1:1 en 2:1 bij een reactietemperatuur tussen 30 en 200°C, bij voorkeur tussen 60 en 150°C en een reactietijd tussen 5 minuten en 10 uur, bij voorkeur tussen 30 minuten en 5 uur. De reactie wordt gewoonlijk uitgevoerd in 15 aanwezigheid van een oplosmiddel, zoals xyleen, tolueen, tetrahydrofuraan en butyl acetaat.
Bij de bereiding van het verknopingsmiddel door omzetting van het hydroxycyclocarbonaat met het polyisocyanaat gaat men op analoge 2q wijze te werk.
De hydroxyl groep van het hydroxycyclocarbonaat kan desgewenst ook door andere reactieve groepen worden vervangen, zoals halogeen (chloor, broom of jood), tosylaat of bepaalde sul fonaatesters. Vervanging van een bepaalde reactieve groep door een andere, 25 bijvoorbeeld een chloride, opent de mogelijkheid om met een andere dan met een met een hydroxyl groep reactieve groep een reactie aan te gaan. Als voorbeeld moge genoemd worden de omzetting van een chloride functioneel cyclocarbonaat met een verbinding met fenolische hydroxyl groepen zoals bijvoorbeeld aanwezig in hydrochinon of bisfenol A.
De verknopingsmiddel en die in het kader van de uitvinding in poedercoatingsamenstel1ingen worden toegepast, kunnen ook door 10 0 2 0 0 8 12 omestering worden verkregen van een polyalkylester met een hydroxyfunctioneel cyclocarbonaat. Geschikte polyalkylesters kunnen worden verkregen door nucleofiele additie van carbanionen aan α,β-onverzadigde carbonyl verbindingen. Eveneens geschikt zijn 5 alkylester getermineerde polyesters afgeleid van een der hiervoor genoemde polycarbonzuren, polyol en en/of estervormende equivalenten daarvan. Als verder voorbeeld kan genoemd worden de omzetting van diethylfumaraat en diethylmalonaat in de tetraethyl ester van 1,1,2,3-propaantetracarbonzuur. Omestering met een hydroxyfunctioneel cyclocarbonaat resulteert vervolgens in een cyclocarbonaatfunctioneel verknopingsmiddel.
Een cyclocarbonaatfunctioneel verknopingsmiddel kan eveneens worden verkregen door omethering van een hydroxyfunctioneel cyclocarbonaat met aminoformaldehyde groepen bevattende verbindingen zoals een lb ureum-of melaminehars.
Een groot aantal polymeren met in aanwezigheid van epoxy ester-en/of ethervormende groepen komt in aanmerking voor toepassing in de 2q thermohardende poedercoatingsamenstellingen volgens de uitvinding. Geschikte polymeren kunnen onder meer carboxyl-, epoxy-, oxetaan-, hydroxyl-, carbonzuuranhydride-, fosforzure-, fosforigzure-, en/of thiolgroepen bevatten. Daarbij gaat de voorkeur uit naar polymeren met vrije hydroxyl-, carbonzuuranhydride- of carboxyl groepen. Het 25 polymeer kan daarbij een polyester, een poly(meth)acrylaat, een polyether, een polyurethaan, een polycarbonaat, een trifluorethyleencopolymeer, een polybutadieen, een polystyreen, of een styreen-maleïnezuuranhydride copolymeer zijn. Daarbij gaat de voorkeur uit naar polyesters en polyacrylaten.

Het molecuul gewicht naar het getal gemiddelde (Mn) ligt gewoonlijk tussen 800 en 10 000, en bij voorkeur tussen 1500 en 7000. Bij een dergelijk molecuul gewicht ligt het vloeitraject gewoonlijk tussen 10 0 2 0 0 8 13 100 en 200°C. De glasovergangstemperatuur wordt gewoonlijk gekozen tussen 20 en 120°C, doch bedraagt gewoonlijk meer dan 30°C en bij voorkeur meer dan 60°C.
5 Geschikte carboxyl functionele polyesters hebben een zuurgetal tussen 5 en 70 mg KOH/g, een glasovergangstemperatuur tussen 30 en 90°C en een hydroxyl getal tussen 0 en 10 mg KOH/g. De carboxyl functionele polyesters kunnen op de gebruikelijke wijze worden verkregen door omzetting van een in hoofdzaak aromatisch polycarbonzuur of estervormend equivalent daarvan met een alifatisch of cycloalifatisch diol of estervormend equivalent daarvan. Voorbeelden van geschikte aromatische polycarbonzuren zijn ftaalzuur, isoftaalzuur, tereftaalzuur, pyromellietzuur, trimel 1 ietzuur, 3,6-dichloorftaalzuur en tetrachloorftaalzuur. Daarbij gaat de voorkeur uit naar een polyester waarvan de zuurcomponent voor 50 en 1b bij voorkeur 70 mol% wordt gevormd door isoftaalzuur en/of tereftaalzuur. Daarnaast kunnen nog andere polycarbonzuren aanwezig zijn zoals tetrahydroftaalzuur, hexahydroftaalzuur, malonzuur, hexahydroendomethyleentetrahydroftaalzuur, azelainezuur, 2q sebacinezuur, decaandicarbonzuur, dimeer vetzuur, adipinezuur, barnsteenzuur en maleïnezuur in een hoeveelheid van ten hoogste 30 en bij voorkeur 20 mol% van het totaal aan carbonzuur. Ook kunnen hydroxycarbonzuren en/of lactonen in de polyesters zijn opgenomen. Als voorbeeld kunnen genoemd worden 12-hydroxystearinezuur, 25 e-caprolacton en de hydroxypivalinezure ester van neopentylglycol. Daarnaast kunnen nog geringe hoeveelheden van een monocarbonzuur aanwezig zijn, zoals benzoëzuur, tert. butylbenzoëzuur, hexahydrobenzoëzuur en verzadigde alifatische monocarbonzuren.
De diolcomponent bestaat in hoofdzaak uit alifatische diolen zoals 2Q ethyleenglycol, propaan-l,2-diol, propaan-l,3-diol, butaan-l,2-diol, butaan-l,4-diol, butaan-l,3-diol, 2,2-dimethylpropaandiol-l,3 (neopentylglycol), hexaan-2,5-diol, hexaan-l,6-diol, diethyleenglycol, 2,2-[bis(4-hydrocyclohexyl)]propaan, 1 0 0 2 0 0 8 14 1,4-dimethylolcyclohexaan, dipropyleenglycol, en 2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)]fenylpropaan en desgewenst geringe hoeveelheden polyolen met een functionaliteit > 2, zoals glycerol, hexaantriol, pentaerythritol, sorbitol, trimethylolpropaan, en 5 tris(2-hydroxyethyl)isocyanuraat. In plaats van polyolen kan ook gebruik worden gemaakt van epoxyverbindingen. De alcohol component bevat bij voorkeur ten minste 50 mol% neopentylglycol.
Het is ook mogelijk om verbindingen met aminogroepen in de polyesters op te nemen. Als voorbeeld kunnen genoemd worden hexaan-l,6-diamine, butaan-l,4-diamine en e-caprolactam. De aminogroep bevattende verbinding kan ten minste een deel van de polyolen vervangen. De op deze wijze verkregen amidegroepen bevattende polyester bezit een verhoogde Tg en de deze polyester bevattende poedercoatingsamenstel1ingen bezitten verbeterde jg spuiteigenschappen.
Na de bereiding van de carboxyl functionele polyester bij een temperatuur van omstreeks 240°C en afkoeling tot een temperatuur van circa 190-200°C kan een hardingskatalysator worden toegevoegd, al 2q dan niet in de vorm van een "masterbatch", waarin desgewenst nog andere additieven kunnen zijn opgenomen. De katalysator kan ook worden toegevoegd tijdens het mengen van de polyester met het verknopingsmiddel in een extruder, tegelijkertijd met pigmenten en vul stoffen.

Met betrekking tot de polyacrylaten die als reactief polymeer in aanmerking komen voor toepassing in de onderhavige poedercoatings gaat de voorkeur in het bijzonder uit naar een polyacrylaat met een hydroxylgetal tussen 0 en 10 mg KOH/g, een zuurgetal tussen 5 en 70 mg KOH/g en een Tg tussen 30 en 90°C.
De katalysatoren die in het kader van de uitvinding in aanmerking komen voor de ringopening van de uit de cyclocarbonaatgroepen 1002008 15 gevormde epoxygroepen zijn dezelfde die gebruikt worden voor het uitharden van epoxyfunctionele harsen met zuur, epoxy-epoxy, en epoxy met anhydride. Zij bevatten gewoonlijk tertiaire aminogroepen, basische nucleofiele groepen en quaternaire 5 ammoniumzouten.
Voorbeelden van geschikte klassen van katalysatoren zijn N-dialkylamine pyridines, tertiaire amines, imidazool derivaten, guanidines en cyclische aminoverbindingen. De katalysatoren kunnen desgewenst geblokkeerd worden. Specifieke voorbeelden van geschikte jg katalysatoren zijn N-dimethylaminopyridine, benzotriazool, triethylamine, trifenylamine, 4,5-difenylimidazool, 1-ethylimidazool, 2-methylimidazool, 4-methylimidazool, tetramethylguanidine, l,5-diazabicyclo[4,3,0]non-5-een en l,5,7-triazabicyclo[4,4,0]dec-5-een.
^ Als quaternaire ammoniumzouten komen dezelfde verbindingen in aanmerking die ook gebruikt worden als ringopener voor de cyclocarbonaatgroep.
Voor de omzetting van de uit de cyclocarbonaatgroepen gevormde 20 epoxygroepen met een carbonzuuranhydride kan gebruik worden gemaakt van een stikstofbevattende katalysator van het type als hiervoor is aangegeven. Voor de reactie van de uit de cycl ocarbonaatgroepen gevormde epoxygroepen met verbindingen met een hydroxyl functionaliteit kan gebruik worden gemaakt van een sterk 25 Lewiszuur. Daarnaast kan nog gebruik worden gemaakt van een extra uitharder, zoals een carbonzuuranhydride. Voor de reactie van een uit een cyclocarbonaatgroep gevormde epoxygroep met een andere uit een cyclocarbonaatgroep gevormde epoxygroep kan gebruik worden gemaakt van een sterk Lewiszuur, waarbij een extra uitharder veelal 2Q tot betere resultaten leidt. Uitharders die naast de cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattende uitharders kunnen worden toegepast, behoren tot de groep van polyanhydriden, hydraziden en/of polyfenolen. De hoeveelheid katalysator is gewoonlijk gelegen tussen 10 0 2 0 0 8 16 0,01 en 10 gew.%, bij voorkeur tussen 0,1 en 5 gew.% berekend op de hoeveel hei d bi ndmi ddel.
Het spreekt vanzelf dat in de onderhavige 5 poedercoatingsamenstel 1 ingen de gebruikelijke pigmenten, vulstoffen, vloeihulpmiddelen en stabilisatoren kunnen zijn opgenomen. Geschikte pigmenten zijn bijvoorbeeld anorganische pigmenten zoals titaniumdioxide, zinksulfide, ijzeroxide en chroomoxide, alsmede organische pigmenten zoals azoverbindingen. Geschikte vulstoffen 10 omvatten onder meer metaaloxiden, silicaten, carbonaten en sulfaten.
Verder kunnen in de poedercoatingsamenstellingen nog stabilisatoren zoals primaire en secundaire antioxidanten en UV-stabilisatoren zijn opgenomen, zoals chinonen, sterisch gehinderde fenolen, fosfonieten, fosfieten, thioethers en HALS-verbindingen. Ter verkrijging van 15 poedercoatings met een goede stabiliteit tijdens het uitharden worden primaire antioxidanten toegevoegd in een hoeveelheid overeenkomend met 0,1 tot 2 gew.% van de bindmiddel samenstel 1ing. Voorbeelden van ontgassingsmiddelen die kunnen worden toegepast zijn 2Q benzoïne en cyclohexaandimethanol bisbenzoaat. Voorbeelden van de de vloei bevorderende middelen zijn onder meer polyalkylacrylaten, fluorkoolstofverbindingen en siliconenolie. Andere additieven omvatten die welke gebruikt worden om de spuitcondities te optimaliseren zoals sterisch gehinderde tertiaire amines. Het 25 carboxyl functionele bindmiddel kan in een extruder worden gemengd met het cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattende verknopingsmiddel, de pigmenten en andere additieven bij een temperatuur tussen 90 en 130°C en na het electrostatisch spuiten uitgehard bij een temperatuur tussen 140 en 250°C onder invloed van de gebruikelijke 3Q katalysator. Gedurende het hardingsproces smelt het poeder en vloeit vervolgens uit over het te bekleden substraat onder vorming van een gelijkmatige, aaneengesloten film.

De poedercoatingsamenstellingen volgens de uitvinding kunnen zowel in droge toestand als vanuit een waterige suspensie op een groot aantal substraten worden aangebracht, zoals kunststoffen, hout, metaal en glas. De uitvinding zal nu worden toegelicht aan de hand 2 van de volgende voorbeelden. Het spreekt vanzelf dat dit uitvoeringsvoorbeelden zijn, waartoe de uitvinding niet is beperkt.
Voorbeeld I
Bereiding van tri s-(2-oxo-l,3-dioxolanyl-4-methyl)isocyanuraat (TGIC-carbonaat)
In een autoclaaf van 3 liter, voorzien van roerder, gas in- en uitlaat, verwarmingsmantel en thermokoppel werd 500 g 1C triglycidylisocyanuraat (TGIC) (Araldit PT810, ex Ciba Geigy), 1500 lb g Ν,Ν-dimethylformamide (DMF) en 5 g tetrabutylammoniumjodide voorgelegd. Het mengsel werd gedurende 2 uur al roerend verhit tot 50°C, waarbij zich een homogeen reactiemengsel vormde. De autoclaaf werd vervolgens gespoeld met koolstofdioxide, waarna het mengsel 2Q werd opgewarmd tot 120°C en de CO2 druk werd verhoogd naar 10 bar. De autoclaaf werd gedurende 6 uur onder deze condities gehouden totdat geen CO2 meer werd opgenomen. Na afkoeling tot kamertemperatuur en aflaten van de druk werd het homogene vloeibare reactiemengsel overgebracht in een rondbodemkolf, waarna 3/4 van het 25 DMF onder verminderde druk werd verwijderd. De resterende vloeistof werd geprecipiteerd door uitgieten in een 3 liter sterk geroerde waterige oplossing. Na filtratie werd de licht gele vloeistof gewassen met heet water en vervolgens gedroogd in vacuo. Het aldus verkregen witte poeder (TGIC-carbonaat) bezat de volgende 30 eigenschappen:
Epoxide getal 1,5 mg KOH/g Smelttraject 229-239 °C
Infraroodanalyse cyclocarbonaat-signaal bij 1810 1/cm.

Voorbeeld II
Bereiding van een poedercoatingsamenstell inq op basis van een carboxyl functionele polyester en het verknopingsmiddel van voorbeeld 5 I
In een extruder werd 498 g van een polyester met carboxyl eindgroepen (Uralac P2220 ex DSM Resins) met een zuurgetal van 52 mg KOH/g, 102 g van het verknopingsmiddel van voorbeeld I en 30 g j^q ethyl tri sfenyl fosfoniumbromi de bij 110°C gemengd met 7 g vloeimiddel (Resiflow PV 88 ex Worlée) en 5 g benzoïne. Na afkoeling werd het extrudaat verkleind tot een poeder en gezeefd over een zeef met een maaswijdte van 80 ^m. De Tg van het poeder bedroeg 55°C. Het poeder werd gedurende 10 minuten bij 200°C uitgehard, waarbij een ^ gelijkmatige coatinglaag werd verkregen.
Voorbeeld III
Bereiding van een verknopingsmiddel op basis van glycerolcarbonaat 2o en een isocyanaat bevattende verbinding
Een mengsel bestaande uit 366 g (1,5 molequivalent) van het trimeer van isophorondiisocyanaat (Vestanat® IPDI-T1890/100%, ex Hüls), 225 g butylacetaat en 0,75 g dibutyltindilauraat werd verhit tot 70°C. 25 Vervolgens werd 177,2 g (1,5 molequivalent) glycerolcarbonaat (ex
Huntsman) gedurende 1 uur druppelsgewijs aan het reactiemengsel toegevoegd. De temperatuur werd hierna nog gedurende 1 uur op 70°C gehouden. Na 1 uur kon via infraroodspectroscopie geen isocyanaat meer worden aangetoond. Het organisch oplosmiddel werd onder 2Q verminderde druk door destillatie verwijderd. Het produkt was een kleurloze vaste stof die smolt bij ca. 130-135°C.

Voorbeeld IV
Bereiding van een carboxyl functionele polyester 5 In een reactieketel van 2 liter die voorzien was van roerder, thermometer en destillatie-eenheid werden 800 g (9,6 molequivalent) tereftaalzuur, 534 g (10,2 molequivalent) neopentylglycol, 16 g (0,36 molequivalent) trimethylolpropaan en 1,5 g dibutyltinoxide voorgelegd. Onder roeren en doorleiden van stikstof werd de ^ temperatuur langzaam verhoogd naar 240°C waarbij water werd afgevoerd. Er werd zolang met de reactie doorgegaan tot het zuurgetal van de polyester < 10 mg KOH/g bedroeg. Vervolgens werd in een tweede stap 150 g (1,8 molequivalent) isoftaalzuur toegevoegd, waarna de verestering doorging tot een polymeer was verkregen met een zuurgetal van 40 mg KOH/g.
Het aldus verkregen hars bezat de volgende eigenschappen: zuurgetal 39,5 mg KOH/g functionaliteit 2,25 Tg 69°C

Bereiding van een poedercoatingsamenstel1ing gebaseerd op een carboxyl functionele polyester van voorbeeld IV en een
25 verknopingsmiddel volgens voorbeeld III
In een extruder werd 480 g van de polyester met carboxyl eindgroepen van voorbeeld IV, 120 g van het verknopingsmiddel van voorbeeld III en 24 g ethyltrisfenylfosfoniumbromide gemengd bij een temperatuur 2q van 110°C met 7 g polyacrylaat als vloeimiddel (Resiflow PV 88 ex Worlée) en 5 g benzoïne. Na afkoeling werd het extrudaat verkleind tot een poeder en gezeefd over een zeef met een maaswijdte van 80 μπι. De Tg van het poeder bedroeg 60°C. Het poeder werd gedurende 10 100 2 0 0 8 20 minuten bij 200°C uitgehard, waarbij een gelijkmatige 55 pm dikke coatinglaag werd verkregen. De slagvastheid van deze coatinglaag bedroeg meer dan 80 kg.cm.

Mutageniteitstest
In onderstaand voorbeeld wordt de mutageniteit van een op 10 cyclocarbonaat gebaseerd verknopingsmiddel vergeleken met die van TGIC. Bij de vergelijking werd gebruik gemaakt van de navolgende richtlijnen: - Organisation for Economie Co-operation and Development (OECD), directive 471: "Genetic Toxicology: Salmonella typhimurium Reverse .. Mutation Assay", (adopted May 26, 1983), 15 - European Economic Community (EEC), Directive 92/69/EEC. Annex V of the EEC Directive 67/548/EEC, Part B: Methods for the
Determination of Toxicity; B.14: "Other Effects-Mutagenicity:
Salmonella typhimurium-Reverse Mutation Assay". EEC Publication 2o no. L383 (adopted December 1992).
De overeenkomstig bovenstaande richtlijnen uitgevoerde studies met behulp van een bepaald type Salmonella lieten duidelijk zien dat het verknopingsmiddel van voorbeeld I in tegenstelling tot TGIC geen 25 mutagene eigenschappen bezit.

Claims (16)
1. Thermohardende poedercoatingsamenstelling omvattend een mengsel van met elkaar reactieve deeltjes en een katalysator, met het 5 kenmerk, dat een deel van de reactieve deeltjes een polymeer met met epoxy ester- en/of ethervormende groepen omvat en een ander deel een 2-oxo-l,3-dioxolan-4-yl-, hierna cyclocarbonaat-, en eventueel epoxygroepen bevattend verknopingsmiddel met een functionaliteit groter dan 1. 10
2. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 1, met het kenmerk, dat de als ringopener voor de cyclocarbonaatgroep gebruikte katalysator aanwezig is in een hoeveelheid van 0,1 tot 5 gew. delen op 100 gew. delen van het mengsel van met elkaar reactieve 1C deeltjes. lb
3. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 1, met het kenmerk, dat de aanwezige hoeveelheid epoxy zuurstof in het verknopingsmiddel na deblokkering van CO2 ten minste 0,4 gew.% 20 bedraagt.
4. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 1, met het kenmerk, dat het cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattend verknopingsmiddel is verkregen door omzetting van een overeenkomstig polyepoxide met 25 kooldioxide.
5. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 4, met het kenmerk, dat het cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattend verknopingsmiddel tris-(2-oxo-l,3-dioxolanyl-4-methyl)isocyanuraat is, dat is 3Q verkregen door omzetting van triglycidylisocyanuraat met kooldioxide. 1 0 0 2 0 0 8

Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 1, met het kenmerk, dat het cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattend verknopingsmiddel is verkregen door omzetting van een een functionele groep bevattend cyclocarbonaat met een verbinding met ten minste twee ten 5 opzichte van die functionele groep reactieve groepen.
7. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 6, met het kenmerk, dat het cyclocarbonaatgroepen bevattend verknopingsmiddel is verkregen door omzetting van een HO-groep bevattend jq cyclocarbonaat met een polyisocyanaat.
8. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 7, met het kenmerk, dat het polyisocyanaat het reactieprodukt is van een hydroxyfunctionele verbinding met een laagmoleculair 1C polyisocyanaat. lb
9. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 1, met het kenmerk, dat het polymeer met met epoxy ester- en/of ethervormende groepen groepen omvat behorende tot de groep van carboxyl, 2Q anhydride en/of hydroxyl.
10. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 9, met het kenmerk, dat het polymeer met met epoxy ester- en/of ethervormende groepen is gekozen uit de groep van hydroxyl, carboxyl en/of 25 carbonzuuranhydride bevattende polyesters, polyacrylaten en/of polyurethanen.
11. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 1, met het kenmerk, dat de glasovergangstemperatuur Tg van het polymeer met met -n epoxy ester- en/of ethervormende groepen is gelegen tussen 20 en 120°C. 10 0 2 0 0 8
12. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 10, met het kenmerk, dat het polymeer een polyester is met een zuurgetal tussen 5 en 70 mg KOH/g, een hydroxyl getal tussen 0 en 10 mg KOH/g en een Tg tussen 30 en 90°C. 5
13. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 10, met het kenmerk, dat het polymeer een polyacrylaat is met een hydroxylgetal tussen 0 en 10 mg KOH/g, een zuurgetal tussen 5 en 70 mg KOH/g en een Tg tussen 30 en 90°C. 10
14. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 1, met het kenmerk, dat het molecuul gewicht (Mn) van het polymeer met met epoxy ester-en/of ethervormende groepen is gelegen tussen 800 en 10 000. 15
15. Poedercoatingsamenstelling volgens conclusie 1, met het kenmerk, dat het molecuul gewicht (Mn) van het polymeer met met epoxy ester-en/of ethervormende groepen is gelegen tussen 1500 en 7000. 20
