Abstract

Una clase de polímeros solubles que poseen una espina dorsal de varillas rígidas que cuando se utilizan para vaciar películas, experimentan un proceso auto-orientador por lo cual la espina dorsal del polímero llega a alinearse en mayor o menor grado en sentido paralelo a la superficie de la película. Esta orientacion "en plano" resulta en una película que exhibe una birefringencia negativa. El grado de la orientacion en plano y por consiguiente la magnitud de la birefringencia negativa es controlada variando la linealidad y la rigidez de la espina dorsal de la clase de polímeros que incluye poliésteres, poliamidas(amida-imidas) y poli (éster-imidas) mediante la seleccion de substituyentes en la cadena de la espina dorsal del polímero. Incrementado la linealidad y la rigidez de la espina dorsal del polímero, se puede incrementar el grado de la orientacion en plano y la birefringencia negativa asociada, inversamente al disminuir la linealidad y la rigidez de la espina dorsal del polímero se puede disminuir la birefringencia negativa.
