Abstract
En la presente se describen métodos para sintetizar 1, 2, 5, 6-hexanotetrol (HTO), 1,6-hexanodiol (HDO) y otros polioles reducidos a partir de glucósidos R o alcoholes de azúcares C5 y C6. Los métodos incluyen poner en contacto el glucósido R o alcohol de azúcar con un catalizador de cobre, de la forma más deseable un catalizador de cobre Raney, con hidrógeno durante un tiempo y a una temperatura y presión que sean suficientes para formar polioles reducidos que tengan de 2 a 3 grupos hidroxi menos que el material de partida. Cuando el compuesto de partida es un alcohol de azúcar C6 tal como el sorbitol o un glucósido R de un azúcar C6 tal como un glucósido metílico, el producto dominante es HTO. Se puede utilizar el mismo catalizador para reducir adicionalmente el HTO a HDO.
