Abstract

The aquaponics production system (APS) is an aquiculture recirculation hybrid for obtaining aquatic organisms and plants, which consists in different elements and processes, where the use of the same hybrid resource will be useful for culturing aquatic organisms and plants, using the bacterial processes for converting wastes of the aquatic animals into nutritive substances for the plants. The specific design of the system, which allows the hybrid element to be reused with a minimum environmental impact, along with the biological filters included in the design, provide the conditions for facilitating and accelerating the natural processes for converting the aquiculture wastes into nutritive substances for the plants. In the APS case, a combination of two biological filters is used, the efficiency in the use of water and energy was considered so that a single circulation pump for moving the water of the whole system being used, also considering the efficiency of the material costs. The correct operation of the APS is performed by a system for injecting air in different points, which ensures an aeration and gas exchange for maintaining a suitable amount of oxygen used by the biological processes, oxidation and development of the living beings. The APS is divided into four areas, a tank for the aquatic organisms, a water clarification deposit, a first biological filter (bioreactor) and finally the second type of biological filter, which is simultaneously used as a planting bed for crop plants, and from where the clarified and filtrated water flows back to the tank of aquatic organisms. The water is flowed through the system in the same order as described before, this may result in a closed recirculation process for avoiding the pollution of natural water sources, plants being supplied with nutrients in a quick an easy manner, so that these being developed in a reduced time and consequently a higher total production may be obtained in the productive cycle. At the same time, the conversion and removal of nitrogen wastes and substances, which are potentially harmful to aquatic organisms, resulting from bacteria and plants provide the aquatic animals with a suitable environment for the correct growth and development thereof.
