Abstract
Un aparato para esterilizar un producto (16) empacado, tal como un alimento o bebida, comprende un par de electrodos (1, 2) llenos de gas conectados con una fuente (18) de energía para generar impulsos de alto voltaje entre los electrodos (1, 2) suficientes para ionizar el gas en los mismos y para crear un campo electromagnético alto entre ellos. Un reflector (7) es provisto para dirigir el campo generado hacia el empaque (16), de manera que el campo electromagnético penetra a través de la pared del empaque (16) y forma un plasma frío del aire atrapado dentro del empaque (16). Este plasma frío comprende ozono y otras especies con base de oxígeno reactivo que tienen un alto potencial oxidante y matan todos los microorganismos en contacto con el ozono y las especies reactivas, lo que resulta en la desinfección del producto así como del interior del empaque sellado.
