Abstract
An electrolytic cell was constructed with a diaphragm made of a hydrolyzed copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and a sulfonated perfluorovinylether, such as FSO2(CF2) OCF(CF3)CF2OCF:CF2, with an equiv. wt. between 900 and 1600. The diaphragm is permselective and generally impervious to liqs. and gases. The copolymer is formed from a satd. alc. soln. MeOH, EtOH, and iso PrOH. The copolymer is stabilized by treatment with boiling H2O or hot, dilute aq. NaOH. The cell was used in the electrolysis of HCl and aq. NaCl.
