Abstract
1,188,636. Pyrolysis process. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 11 Dec., 1968 [14 Dec., 1967], No. 68816/68. Heading C2C. Perfluorocarbons, e.g. hexafluoropropylene and octafluorocyclobutane, are obtained by pyrolysing tetrafluoroethylene and contacting the pyrolysis products, before they have cooled to a temperature at which polymerization occurs, with (a) gaseous HC1 or HF or (b) an aqueous solution of HC1 or an aqueous solution containing fluoride ions, the amount of HC1, HF or the compound fluoride ion being sufficient to suppress the formation of solid polymer. The gaseous suppressant (a) may be supplied directly by injection or it may be formed in situ by copyrolysing tetrafluoroethylene with compounds which yield HC1 or HF under the reaction conditions, e.g. chlorodifluoromethane or fluoroform.
