세균성 질염과 함께 흔한 질환인 칸디다성 질염은 진균인 칸디다 알비칸스(Candida albicans) 균이 습한 음부에 서식하면서 염증을 일으키는 질환으로서, 약 75%의 여성이 살아가는 동안 한 번 이상 질과 외음부의 칸디다성 질염을 겪으며 45%의 여성이 1년에 2회 이상의 재발을 겪는 흔한 질환이다. 건강한 사람의 구강, 장, 질 등에 정상적으로 보유하고 있는 칸디다(주로 Candida albicans)가 임신이나 경구용 피임약 장기 복용 등으로 여성 호르몬의 상태가 비정상적일 때, 감기나 당뇨병, 에이즈의 이유로 면역성이 극도로 쇠약할 때 감염을 유발하게 된다. 비만, 항생제의 알레르기나 관절염 등의 치료제로 쓰이는 부신 피질 호르몬의 복용 등에 의해서도 발병할 수 있다. 항생제의 투여로 인한 발병의 경우 항생제가 질 내의 유익한 유산균을 죽임으로써 발생하는데 이런 경우 재발의 가능성도 크다. 너무 꼭 끼는 거들이나 바지 등을 입어 통풍이 안 되거나 목욕 후 외음부의 물기를 잘 닦지 않아 젖은 팬티를 입은 경우, 생리 중 패드를 자주 갈지 않는 경우에도 잘 발생한다. 질에 칸디다 알비칸스가 서식하고 있는 여성의 50%만이 증상이 있는데 주증상은 냉이 많아지고 피부에 염증 반응이 생겨서 가려운 것이며, 병의 종류와 정도 또는 2차 세균 감염 등에 따라서 피부가 벗겨지거나 고름이 나오는 등 차이가 있다. 특징적 증상으로는 짙고 하얀 분비물이 나오며, 외음부는 매우 신경이 예민하여 아프거나 때로 부종과 염증이 생기기도 한다. 작열감, 성교통, 부종, 외음부 통증 등이 있고 임상 소견으로는 외음부 및 질의 홍반, 울혈, 표피박리, 소포, 농포, 등을 볼 수 있다.Candida vaginitis, a common disease along with bacterial vaginosis, is a disease in which the fungus Candida albicans inhabits the moist genital area and causes inflammation.
