Abstract
본 발명은 활성 애노드 물질로서의 리튬 금속 또는 리튬 합금 중 하나, 1.5 내지 3.4 V vs. Li/Li+ 범위의 산화환원 전위를 지니는 활성 캐소드 물질 및 전해질 성분으로서의 리튬 로다니드(LiSCN)를 함유하는 재충전 가능한 비-수성 리튬 배터리에 관한 것이다.
Description
리튬 이온 배터리(Lithium ion batteries: LiBs)는 현재 가장 높은 비에너지 밀도(specific energy density)를 지니는 배터리 시스템이다. 이들은 상이한 전위 수준에서 리튬 이온을 가역적 삽입 및 탈삽입할 수 있는 두 리튬 삽입 물질의 조합으로 이루어진다. 일반적으로, 캐소드(양극 단자)는 리튬 금속 옥사이드로 이루어지는 반면, 애노드(음극 활성 단자)는 그라파이트 물질(graphitic material)을 함유한다. 또한, 애노드 반응은 다음과 같다:
Li+ + e- + 6C ↔ LiC6
그라파이트 물질의 이론적인 정전용량은 LiC6의 한정된 화학양론에 의해서 주어지며, 372 mAh/g이다.
더 높은 정전용량을 지니는 애노드 물질이 또한 공지되어 있으며, 다른 무엇보다도 최고의 것은 리튬 금속 자체이고, 그러한 리튬 금속은 3,860 MAh/g의 이론적인 비정전용량을 지닌다. 그러나, "통상"의 리튬 이온 캐소드 물질(즉, 리튬 금속 옥사이드)와 조합하여 리튬 금속 애노드를 사용하는 것은 불가능한데, 그 이유는, 이러한 경우에, 전극 둘 모두가 이미 리튬화된 상태에 있기 때문이다. 따라서, 리튬화된 애노드 물질, 특히, 리튬 금속 자체가 사용되어야 하는 경우에, 비-리튬화된(또는 부분적으로 리튬화된) 캐소드 물질이 사용되어야 한다. 그러한 물질은, 예를 들어, 하기 물질을 포함한다:
그러한 물질이 과충전되는 때에, 비가역적인 구조적 변화가 발생할 수 있으며, 그러한 구조적 변화는 캐소드 물질의 기능을 손상시키거나 완전히 파괴할 수 있다. 일반적으로, Li 삽입 전위는 대략 0.5-1.5 V가 초과되지 않아야 한다. 또한, 충전 전위가 초과되는 것을 방지하는 것이 중요한데, 그 이유는, 그렇지 않으면, 전해질 성분, 예를 들어, 유기 용매가 에너지의 방출과 함께 산화될 수 있기 때문이다. 리튬 이온 배터리에서 전형적으로 사용되는 카르보네이트는 약 4.4 V vs. Li/Li+에 대해서 안정하지만, 이들은 리튬 금속 애노드 또는 리튬 합금 애노드를 지니는 갈바니 전지(galvanic cell)의 경우에 매우 적합하지 않다. 금속 애노드를 사용할 수 있게 하기 위해서, 환원-안정성 용매, 일반적으로는 에테르가 요구된다. 그러나, 그러한 용매(디메톡시에탄, 디에틸 에테르)는 단지 약 3.6 V에 대해서 안정하다(K. 충전 전위에 대한 그러한 제한은 배터리 관리 시스템에 의해서 전기적으로 실행될 수 있는데, 그러한 시스템은 비교적 복잡하고 오작동 시에 위험한 혼란을 야기시킬 수 있다. 따라서, 요망되는 최종 충전 전위가 초과되는 것을 방지하는 내재적 (화학적) 보호 시스템을 지니는 것이 바람직하다. 그러한 시스템은 소위 산화환원 셔틀 화합물(redox shuttle compound)에 의해서 제공된다. 그러한 화합물은 특정의 충전 전위가 초과되는 때에 산화된다. 산화된 형태는 안정하고 애노드로의 이동 또는 확산에 의해서 돌아다닐 수 있고, 그러한 애노드에서, 이는 초기 형태로 방전(환원)될 수 있다. 이어서, 환원된 종은 애노드 등 상에서 다시 산화될 수 있다.
상기 언급된 캐소드 물질을 위한 가역적인 산화환원 셔틀 화합물은 아직 기재된 바 없다.
본 발명의 목적은 가역적 산화환원 셔틀 화합물을 함유하며 무-리튬 캐소드 물질의 충전 전위 위의 약 0.5-1.5V에서 그리고 에테르성 용매의 분해의 시작점(약 3.6V) 미만에서 가역적으로 산화하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리를 제공하는 것이다.
이러한 목적은 충전된 상태에서의 활성 애노드 물질로서 리튬 금속 또는 합금 중 하나, 및 1.5 내지 3.4 V vs. Li/Li+ 범위의 산화환원 전위를 지니는 활성 캐소드 물질 및 전해질 성분으로서 리튬 로다니드(lithium rhodanide: LiSCN)를 함유하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리에 의해서 본 발명에 따라서 달성된다.
도 1은 3.0-4.0 V vs. Li/Li+의 주사범위에서 100 mV/s의 진행 속도로 기록된 1M LiPF6/EC:DMC(1:1 중량비) 중의 0.1 M LiSCN를 지니는 전해질의 순환전압전류곡선(cyclovoltagram)을 도시하고 있다.
분말화된 리튬 금속 또는 분말화된 리튬 합금은 바람직하게는 활성 애노드 물질로서 존재한다. 분말화된 입자로부터 생성된 이들 애노드는 가압 또는 롤링 등을 수행함으로써 기계적으로 콤팩트한 형태로 존재할 수 있거나, 시트 금속과 거시적으로 유사한 구조를 얻기 위해서 소결에 의해서 압축될 수 있다. 그러나, 콤팩트한 분말 애노드는 복합 구조가 특징이다. 즉, 분말화된 주요 입자의 상 경계가 고해상 영상화 방법(예를 들어, 주사 전자 현미경: scanning electron microscopy)에 의해서 구별 가능하다. 분말화된 애노드 층 또는 분말로부터 유래된 애노드 층의 사용은 비전류 부하(specific current load)(즉, 단위 표면적에 관해서)가 균질의 시트 금속 애노드에 비해서 감소되어 감소된 수지상 성장을 유도하는 이점이 있다(참조예: S.W. Kim, Metals and Materials, 6 (2000), 345-349).
이원 리튬 이차적 금속 화합물이 리튬 합금으로서 사용되고, 여기서, 이차적 금속은 바람직하게는 Si, Sn, Al, Ab로 구성된 군으로부터 선택된다.
캐소드 물질은 CFx, 전이금속 옥사이드, 전이금속 설파이드, 전이금속 플루오라이드, 전이금속 옥시플루오라이드, 유기 산화환원-활성 화합물뿐만 아니라, 황 및/또는 셀레늄으로 구성된 군으로부터 선택된다.
캐소드 물질은 바람직하게는 CFx, MnO2, V2O5, V6O13, FeOF, FeF3, FeF2, S로부터 선택된다.
재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리에서의 전해질은 바람직하게는 실온에서 액체 상태, 겔라틴성 상태 또는 고체 상태이다. 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리는 바람직하게는 사이클릭 또는 비사이클릭 에테르, 폴리에테르, 니트릴, 락톤, 카르본산 에스테르 및/또는 이온성 액체로 구성된 군으로부터 선택된 유기 비양성자성 용매를 전해질로서 함유한다.
전해질은 바람직하게는 테트라하이드로피란, 테트라하이드로푸란, 1,2-디메톡시에탄, 디에틸렌 글리콜 디메틸 에테르, 아세토니트릴, 아디포니트릴(adiponitrile), 말로디니트릴(malodinitrile), 글루타로니트릴, γ-부티로락톤 및 이미다졸륨 염으로 구성된 군으로부터 선택된 하나 이상의 유기 비양성자성 용매를 함유한다.
재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리의 전해질은 바람직하게는 LiSCN 및 하나 이상의 다른 전도성 염을 함유할 수 있다.

재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리의 전해질은 폴리에틸렌 옥사이드, 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 폴리비닐이덴 플루오라이드 또는 이들의 어떠한 혼합물로 구성된 군으로부터 선택된 유기 폴리머를 함유할 수 있다.
LiSCN는 0.01 내지 15 wt%의 농도로 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리 내의 전해질에 존재한다.
LiSCN는 바람직하게는 1 내지 10 wt%의 농도로 전해질에 존재한다.
본 발명은 또한 리튬 로다니드(lithium rhodanide)가 전해질 성분으로서 함유되는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리에서 사용하기 위한 전해질에 관한 것이다.
LiSCN는 바람직하게는 0.01 내지 15 wt%의 농도로 전해질에 존재한다.
본 발명은 특히 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리의 전해질 중의 산화환원 셔틀 화합물로서 LiSCN의 용도에 관한 것이다.
LiSCN은 약 3.4 V vs. Li/Li+의 전위가 초과하는 때에 산화되고 후속 환원성 브랜치(reductive branch)에서 환원된다는 것이 밝혀졌다. 놀랍게도, 이러한 반응은 가역적이다: 이를 설명하는 3개의 사이클이 도 1에 도시되어 있다. LiSCN의 특수 이점은 LiSCN 자체가 강한 해리 리튬 염이며, 그에 따라서, Li 전해질로서 사용될 수 있다는 것이다. 따라서, LiSCN에 추가로 전도성 염 기능을 가지는 또 다른 리튬 염을 사용하는 것이 원칙적으로 필요하지 않다.
전해질은 액체 형태, 젤라틴성 형태 또는 고체 형태로 존재할 수 있다. 리튬 로다니드 외에, 전해질은 유기 비양성자성 용매, 예를 들어, 카르본산 에스테르(디메틸 카르보네이트, 디에틸 카르보네이트, 에틸메틸 카르보네이트, 프로필렌 카르보네이트, 에틸렌 카르보네이트), 사이클릭 또는 비사이클릭 에테르(디부틸 에테르, 테트라하이드로피란 또는 테트라하이드로푸란), 폴리에테르 (1,2-디메톡시에탄 또는 디에틸렌 글리콜 디메틸 에테르) 뿐만 아니라, 니트릴(아세토니트릴, 아디포니트릴, 말로디니트릴, 글루타로니트릴) 및 락톤(γ-부티로락톤), 이온성 액체(예, 이미다졸륨 염), 추가의 리튬 염(예, LiPF6, 리튬 플루오로알킬 포스페이트, LiBF4), 이미드 염(예, LiN(SO2CF3)2), LiOSO2CF3, 메티드 염(예, LiC(SO2CF3)3), LiClO4, 리튬 킬레이토보레이트(예, LiBOB), 리튬 플루오로킬레이토보레이트(예, LiC2O4BF2), 리튬 킬레이토포스페이트(예, LiTOP) 및 리튬 플루오로킬레이토포스페이트(예, Li(C2O4)2PF2), 리튬 할라이드(LiCl, LiBr, LiI), 첨가제(에, 비닐렌 카르보네이트) 및/또는 어떠한 혼합물로의 극성 폴리머들(예, 폴리에틸렌 옥사이드, 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 폴리비닐이덴 플루오라이드)를 함유할 수 있다.
LiSCN은 0.01 내지 15%, 특히 바람직하게는 1 내지 10%의 농도로 전해질에 존재한다.
도 1은 3.0-4.0 V vs. Li/Li+의 주사범위에서 100 mV/s의 진행 속도로 기록된 1M LiPF6/EC:DMC(1:1 중량비) 중의 0.1 M LiSCN를 지니는 전해질과 Pt 전극의 순환전압전류곡선(cyclovoltagram)을 도시하고 있다.
Claims (15)
- 활성 애노드 물질로서 리튬 금속 또는 리튬 합금 중 하나를 함유하며, 1.5 내지 3.4 V vs. Li/Li+ 범위의 산화환원 전위를 지니는 활성 캐소드 물질 및 전해질 성분으로서 리튬 로다니드(lithium rhodanide: LiSCN)를 함유함을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 1항에 있어서, 콤팩트한 형태(compacted form)로 존재할 수 있는 분말화된 리튬 금속 또는 분말화된 리튬 합금이 활성 애노드 물질로서 포함됨을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 1항 또는 제 2항에 있어서, 캐소드 물질이 CFx, 전이금속 옥사이드, 전이금속 설파이드, 전이금속 플루오라이드, 전이금속 옥시플루오라이드, 유기 산화환원-활성 화합물뿐만 아니라, 황 및/또는 셀레늄으로 구성된 군으로부터 선택됨을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 3항에 있어서, 캐소드 물질이 CFx, MnO2, V2O5, V6O13, FeOF, FeF3, FeF2, S로부터 선택됨을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 1항 내지 제 4항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 전해질이 실온에서 액체 상태, 겔라틴성 상태 또는 고체 상태임을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 5항에 있어서, 전해질이 사이클릭 또는 비사이클릭 에테르, 폴리에테르, 니트릴, 락톤, 카르본산 에스테르 및/또는 이온성 액체로 구성된 군으로부터 선택되는 유기 비양성자성 용매를 함유함을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 6항에 있어서, 전해질이 테트라하이드로피란, 테트라하이드로푸란, 1,2-디메톡시에탄, 디에틸렌 글리콜 디메틸 에테르, 아세토니트릴, 아디포니트릴(adiponitrile), 말로디니트릴(malodinitrile), 글루타로니트릴, γ-부티로락톤 및 이미다졸륨 염으로 구성된 군으로부터 선택된 하나 이상의 유기 비양성자성 용매를 함유함을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 1항 내지 제 7항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 전해질이 LiSCN 및 하나 이상의 추가의 전도성 염을 함유함을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 1항 내지 제 8항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 추가의 전도성 염이 LiPF6, 리튬 플루오로알킬 포스페이트, LiBF4, 이미드 염, LiOSO2CF3, 메티드 염(methide salt), LiClO4, 리튬 킬레이토보레이트(lithium chelatoborate), 리튬 플루오로킬레이토보레이트(lithium fluorochelatoborate), 리튬 킬레이토포스페이트(lithium chelatophosphate), 리튬 플루오로킬레이토포스페이트 및/또는 리튬 할라이드로 구성된 군으로부터 선택됨을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 1항 내지 제 9항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, 전해질이 폴리에틸렌 옥사이드, 폴리아크릴로니트릴, 폴리비닐이덴 플로오라이드 또는 이들의 어떠한 혼합물로 구성된 군으로부터 선택된 유기 폴리머를 함유함을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 1항 내지 제 10항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서, LiSCN이 0.01 내지 15 wt%의 농도로 전해질에 존재함을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 제 11항에 있어서, LiSCN이 1 내지 10 wt%의 농도로 전해질에 존재함을 특징으로 하는 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리.
- 리튬 로다니드(lithium rhodanide)가 전해질 성분으로서 존재함을 특징으로 하는 제 1항 내지 제 11항 중 어느 한 항에 따른 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리에 사용하기 위한 전해질.
- 제 13항에 있어서, LiSCN이 0.01 내지 15 wt%의 농도로 전해질에 존재함을 특징으로 하는 전해질.
- 재충전 가능한 비수성 리튬 배터리의 전해질 중의 산화환원 셔틀 화합물로서 LiSCN의 용도.
