Abstract

Description
US 5,840,414는 금속 산화물을 포함시켜서 친수성이 되는, 연료전지 시스템에 사용하기 위한 탄소 플레이트를 발표한다. 이 특허는 칼럼5, 31-52행에서 유망한 방법을 열거한다. 이 특허는 금속 염화물로 처리하고, 그 자리에서 금속 염화물을 금속 수산화물로 전환시키고, 그 자리에서 금속 수산화물을 금속 산화물로 전환시킴으로써 흑연 플레이트에 금속 산화물을 포함시키는 3-단계 방법을 상세히 설명하며 예시한다(칼럼5, 53행-칼럼6, 21행; 칼럼7, 7-25행).
US 5,998,058은 "친수성" 및 "소수성" 기공을 둘 다 함유하도록 처리된 탄소섬유 기판으로 형성되는, 폴리머 전해질막 연료전지용 전극 백킹 층을 발표한다. 이 특허는 사염화주석 오수화물 용액에 침지시킨 이후 암모니아에 침지시켜 기공을 더욱 친수성이 되게 하는 방법을 발표한다.

발명의 요약
간략하면 본 발명은 a) i)1-15중량% 금속 산화물과 ii)0.01-5중량% 분산제를 포함한 하나 또는 그 이상의 금속 산화물의 수성 분산물에 탄소섬유 구조물을 침지하고; b) 후속단계로 실질적으로 모든 분산제를 제거하도록 탄소섬유 구조물을 충분히 가열하는 단계를 포함한 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물 제조방법을 제공한다. 대체로 수성 분산물은 1-5중량% 금속 산화물, 특히 1-3중량% 금속 산화물, 더더욱 1.5-2.5중량% 금속 산화물을 함유한다. 대체로 금속 산화물은 Sn, Si, Zr, Ti, Al 및 Ce의 산화물에서 선택되고 SnO2가 선호된다. 대체로 분산제는 TritonTMX100과 같은 알코올 알콕실레이트와 같은 비-이온성 분산제이다. 대체로 침지단계는 30분 이내, 특히 10분 이내, 더더욱 1분 이내에 종료될 수 있다. 대체로 전체 방법은 30분 이내, 특히 20분 이내, 더더욱 5분 이내에 종료될 수 있다.
또 다른 측면에서 본 발명은 본 발명의 방법에 따라 제조되며 탄소 1그램당 20-50밀리그램의 금속에 상당하는 금속 산화물이 적재된 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물을 제공한다.
당해 분야에는 발표되지 않으나 본 발명에 의해 제공되는 것은 균일한 금속 산화물 코팅이 함침된 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물을 간단하고 신속하게 제조하는 방법이다.
본 출원에서 "계면활성제"와 "분산제"란 용어는 상호 교환하여 사용할 수 있다.
연료전지와 같은 전기분해 전지에서 전극 백킹 층이나 가스 확산 층으로 유용하며 균일한 금속 산화물 코팅이 함침된 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물을 간단하고 신속하게, 대체로 약 15분에 걸쳐서 제조하는 방법을 제공하는 것이 본 발명의 장점이다. 처리된 기판을 습윤시키기 위해서 진공 소스를 요하지 않는 것이 본 발명의 장점이다. 단일한 액체 침지 탱크만 필요로 하는 것이 본 발명의 장점이다. 처리 동안 모니터링이나 시약 첨가를 요하지 않는 것이 본 발명의 장점이다. 일부 공지 기술의 공정에서 사용되는 사염화주석 오수화물과 같이 독성 및 부식성인 시약의 사용을 피한다는 것이 본 발명의 장점이다.
본 발명은 i) 1-15중량%의 금속 산화물과 ii) 0.01-5중량의 분산제를 포함한 금속 산화물 수성 분산물에 탄소섬유 구조물을 침지하고; 이어서 탄소섬유 구조물을 가열하여 분산제를 제거함으로써 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물을 제조하는 방법에 관계한다.

본 발명은 a) i)1-15중량% 금속 산화물과 ii)0.01-5중량% 분산제를 포함한 하나 또는 그 이상의 금속 산화물의 수성 분산물에 탄소섬유 구조물을 침지하고; b) 후속단계로 실질적으로 모든 분산제를 제거하도록 탄소섬유 구조물을 충분히 가열하는 단계를 포함한 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물 제조방법을 제공한다.
대체로 금속 산화물은 Sn, Si, Zr, Ti, Al 및 Ce의 산화물에서 선택되고 SnO2가 선호된다. 대체로 수성 분산물은 1-5중량% 금속 산화물, 특히 1-3중량% 금속 산화물, 더더욱 1.5-2.5중량% 금속 산화물을 함유한다. 실시예 3에서 보여주는 바와 같이 처리 분산물에서 금속 산화물의 중량%에 대한 친수성 탄소 섬유 구조물에서 금속의 적재 질량의 관계가 0.5-2.5중량% 금속 산화물과 2.5-15중량% 금속 산화물 영역에 있는 분산물의 경우 거의 선형 함수이다. 대체로 본 발명에 따른 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물은 탄소 1그램당 금속 20-50밀리그램에 상당하는 금속 산화물이 적재된다. 특히 금속 산화물이 SnO2일 경우에 본 발명에 따른 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물은 대체로 탄소 1그램당 Sn 20-50밀리그램에 상당하는 SnO2가 적재된다. 금속 산화물 입자 크기는 대체로 1000nm미만, 특히 대체로 100nm미만, 더더욱 대체로 40nm미만, 가장 바람직하게 대체로 20nm미만이다.
가열단계에서 제거될 수 있는 모든 적합한 분산제가 사용될 수 있다. 백금 촉매와 같은 연료전지 촉매의 활성도에 악영향을 미치지 않는 분산제가 유리하다. 적합한 비-이온성, 음이온성, 양이온성 및 양쪽성 분산제가 사용될 수 있다. 대체로 분산제는 비-이온성이거나 암모늄 이온과 같이 실질적으로 비-금속성인 상대 이온만을 함유한다. 가장 일반적으로 분산제는 비-이온성이다. 본 발명의 실시에 유용한 비-이온성 분산제는 TritonTMX100, TomadyneTM101LF, IconelTMTDA6, IconolTMTDA9, TritonTMDF-12과 같은 알코올 알콕실레이트; VaronicTMK-205와 같은 아민 알콕실레이트; GlucponTM425와 같은 알킬 글루코사이드; 알칸올아미드; Tomah 제품 AO-14-2(디히드록시에틸이소데실옥시프로필아민 옥사이드), NinoxTMM(미리스틸 아민 옥사이드) 및 VaronicTMK-205(코코아민 에톡실레이트)와 같은 아민 옥사이드를 포함할 수 있다.
본 발명의 계면활성제로 유용한 4차 아민은 화학식 1의 아민이다:
여기서 R1및 R2은 동일 또는 상이하고 알킬기와 치환된 알킬기로 구성된 군에서 선택되고, R3은 약 10-20개의 탄소원자를 갖는 직쇄 알킬, 분지화 알킬, 직쇄 헤테로알킬, 및 분지화 헤테로알킬로 구성된 군에서 선택되고, R4는 약 1-5개의 탄소원자를 갖는 알킬기로 구성된 군(특히 메틸)에서 선택되고, X는 할로겐 원자, 특히 염소원자이다. 4차 아민염의 예는 Tomah Products(Milton, WI)로부터 구매 가능한 "Q-17-5"(이소트리데실옥시프로필 폴리(5) 옥시에틸렌 메틸 암모늄 클로라이드)와 "Q-S-80"(모노 소야 암모늄 클로라이드 쿼터너리)이다.
양쪽성 계면활성제는 Tego BetaineTML7(Goldschmidt)와 같은 알킬아미도프로필 디메틸베타인, IncronamTM30(Croda)와 같은 알킬아미도베타인, ChimexaneTMHD(Chimex)와 같은 이미다졸린 유도체, MonatericTMISA 35(Mona)와 같은 N-알릴-베타-이미노디프로피오네이트를 포함한다.
가장 일반적인 분산제는 비-이온성 분산제이고 알콜 알콕실레이트가 가장 선호된다.
대체로 처리 분산물은 0.01-5중량% 비-이온성 분산제, 특히 0.01-1중량%, 더더욱 0.01-0.1중량%의 비-이온성 분산제를 포함한다.
모든 적합한 탄소섬유 구조물이 사용될 수 있다. 대체로 탄소섬유 구조물은 직조 및 부직 탄소섬유 구조물에서 선택된다. 발명의 실시에 유용한 탄소섬유 구조물은 TorayTM카본지, SpectraCarbTM카본지, AFNTM부직 탄소천, ZoltexTM탄소천등을 포함한다.
대체로 침지단계는 30분 이내, 특히 10분 이내, 더더욱 1분 이내에 종료된다. 대체로 전체 방법은 30분 이내, 특히 20분 이내, 더더욱 약 15분 이내에 종료된다. 자동화된 연속 공정에서 5분 미만의 시간이 전형적이고 2분 미만의 시간도 가능하다.
또한, 본 발명은 본 발명의 방법에 따라 제조된 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물을 제공한다. 본 발명의 방법에 따라 제조된 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물은 도 1과 도 2의 비교로 알 수 있듯이 금속 산화물의 분포에 있어서 높은 균일도를 갖는다. 대체로 본 발명에 따라 제조된 탄소섬유 구조물은 탄소 1그램당 금속 20-50밀리그램에 상당하는 금속 산화물이 적재된다. 특히 금속 산화물이 SnO2일 경우에 본 발명에 따른 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물은 대체로 탄소 1그램당 Sn 20-50밀리그램에 상당하는 SnO2가 적재된다.
본 발명은 연료전지와 같은 전기분해 전지에서 전극 백킹 층이나 가스 확산 층으로 유용한 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물을 제공하는데 유용하다.
본 발명의 목적과 장점은 다음 실시예에서 더욱 제시되지만 이들 실시예에서지정된 물질과 그 양과 기타 조건 및 세부사항이 본 발명을 부당하게 한정시키는 것으로 해석되어서는 안된다.
별도 언급이 없는한 모든 시약은 Aldrich Chemical Co.(Milwaukee, WI)에서 입수하거나 공지 방법으로 합성될 수 있다.
처리 방법
모든 SnO2분산물의 경우에 Nyacol(R) SN15CGSnO2분산물(Nyacol Nano Technologies, Inc., Ashland, MA)이 사용된다. 입수된 분산물은 15중량% SnO2를 함유한다. 분산물 pH는 10.0이고 SnO2입자 크기는 10-15nm이다. 저 함량의 SnO2분산물은 탈-이온수를 첨가하여 제조된다. 희석한 후에 각 SnO2분산물에 미량의 비-이온성 계면활성제가 첨가된다. 비-이온성 계면활성제는 TritonTMX100(Union Carbide Corp., Danbury, CT)이다.
다공성 탄소섬유 기판은 TorayTM카본지(Toray International Inc., Tokyo, Japan)과 SpectraCarbTM카본지(Spectracorp, Lawerence, MA)에서 선택된다. 다공성 탄소섬유 기판 샘플은 5초간 SnO2/계면활성제 분산물에 침지되고 매달아 건조한다.
이후에 탄소섬유 기판을 380℃까지 10분간 가열하여 탄소섬유 기판을 열처리하여 계면활성제를 제거한다.
실시예1
2가지 상이한 분산물, 즉 2.5중량% SnO2분산물과 15.0중량% SnO2분산물을 사용하여 Toray 카본지 060 샘플이 위에서 기재된 대로 처리되고 비-처리된 Toray 카본지 060과 비교된다. 비-처리된 Toray 종이 샘플은 물을 빨아들이지 않았다. SnO2로 처리된 샘플은 쉽게 물을 빨아들였다.
실시예2
2.15중량% SnO2분산물을 사용하여 Toray 카본지 060 샘플이 위에서 기재된 대로 처리되고 전자 현미경 사진으로 비-처리된 Toray 카본지 060과 비교된다. 도 1은 2.15중량% SnO2로 처리된 샘플의 배율 500 전자 현미경사진이고 도 2는 비-처리된 샘플의 배율 500 전자 현미경 사진이다.
실시예3
이 실시예는 분산물에서 SnO2중량%에 대해서 탄소섬유 기판상의 SnO2최종 적재량의 관계를 보여준다. DI-물을 첨가하여 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 1.9, 2.0, 2.5, 3.6, 7.2, 및 15중량%의 농도로 분산물 샘플이 제조된다.
Toray 카본지 060 샘플이 위에 기재된 대로 처리되고 이후에 5.10cm 직경의 원으로 다이 절단되고 무게를 잰다. 도 3 및 도 4는 처리 분산물에서 SnO2중량%의 함수로서 SnO2질량 적재 관계를 보여주는 그래프로서 0.5-2.5중량% SnO2및 2.5-15중량% SnO2의 영역에 있는 분산물의 경우 거의 선형이다.
실시예4
2.0, 4.0, 8.0 및 15중량% SnO2분산물을 사용하여 SpectraCarb 카본지 샘플이 위에서 기재된 대로 처리된다. 탈-이온수와 Fibro Dat 접촉각 기기(모델 Fibro Dat 1100, Fibro System AB, Hagersten, Sweden)를 사용하여 각 샘플의 물 흡수 속도가 측정된다. 다음 비교 샘플, 즉 비-처리된 SpectraCarb, 비-처리된 Toray 카본지 600, 및 치밀한 아세테이트 편에 대해서도 측정된다.
도 5는 결과의 데이터를 보여준다. 본 발명에 따라 처리한 이후에 SpectraCarb 카본지에 대한 물 흡수 속도는 3-4배 빨라진다.
실시예5
2.5 및 15중량% SnO2분산물을 사용하여 Toray 카본지 060 시트가 위에서 기재된 대로 처리된다. 2.5 및 15중량% SnO2처리된 Toray와 비-처리된 Toray 카본지 060에서 직경 20.3cm의 샘플을 취한다. 주어진 압력에서 압축과 전기 비저항을 동시에 측정하도록 2개의 전기적으로 분리된 테이블 사이에서 샘플을 압축하는 프레스를 포함하는 저항/압축 측정기를 사용하여 각 샘플이 테스트 된다. 도 6은 압력에 대한 압축 데이터를 보여준다. 도 7은 압력에 대한 비저항 데이터를 보여준다. 본 발명에 따른 처리가 카본지의 물성을 크게 손상시키지 않음을 알 수 있다.
본 발명의 범주 및 원리에서 벗어나지 않으면서 본 발명의 다양한 변경이 당해 분야의 숙련자에게 가능하므로 위의 예시적인 실시예로 본 발명이 부당하게 제한되어서는 안된다.
Claims (25)
- a) i)1-15중량% 금속 산화물과 ii)0.01-5중량% 분산제를 포함한 하나 또는 그 이상의 금속 산화물의 수성 분산물에 탄소섬유 구조물을 침지하고;b) 후속단계로 실질적으로 모든 분산제를 제거하도록 탄소섬유 구조물을 충분히 가열하는 단계를 포함한 친수성 탄소섬유 구조물 제조방법.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 금속 산화물이 Sn, Si, Zr, Ti, Al 및 Ce의 산화물로 이루어진 군에서 선택되는 제조방법.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 금속 산화물이 SnO2인 제조방법.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 수성 분산물이 1-5중량% 금속 산화물을 포함하는 제조방법.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 수성 분산물이 1-3중량% 금속 산화물을 포함하는 제조방법.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 수성 분산물이 1.5-2.5중량% 금속 산화물을 포함하는제조방법.
