축산 분뇨와 같은 유기 폐수는 강이나 하천에 방류하면 공해를 유발하므로 화학적으로 처리하거나 또는 미생물에 의한 처리법으로 정화시켜 방류하여야 한다. 일반적으로 유기물 폐수, 특히 인분과 같은 폐수는 정화조에 저장 중에 미생물 또는 원생 동물들이 자연발생적으로 형성되어 유기물을 대사하면서 생성되는 물질들이 오수 중의 무기물질과 같은 고형물을 핵으로 하여 교질상으로 되면서 큰 입자가 형성되어 침전되도록 되었다. 이러한 자연 정화방법은 시간이 오래 걸리고 완전한 처리가 되지 아니하여 정화조 등에서 방류되는 오수가 하천이나 강을 오염시키는 문제점이 나타나고 있다. 최근에는 오수를 화학적으로 처리하거나 또는 활성 미생물을 이용하여 처리하는 방법이 개발되었다. 그러나 전술한 화학적인 처리나 미생물 처리는 BOD가 낮은 200ppm 정도의 오수에서는 좋은 결과를 가져오지만 완전한 처리를 위하여는 3차에 걸친 처리를 하여야만 하였다.Organic wastewater, such as livestock manure, causes pollution when discharged into rivers or rivers, so it must be treated chemically or purified by microbial treatment.
