Abstract

Description
본 발명은 휘발성 오염물질의 정화(remediation)용 원위치 열방산 (in-situ thermal desorption method) 방법에 관한 것이다.
토양으로부터 휘발성 오염물질을 제거하기 위한 원위치 열방산 방법은 예를 들어 U.S. 특허 No. 4,973,811, 5,076,727, 5,152,341, 5,190,405, 5,193,934, 5,221,827 및 5,271,693 에 개시되어 있다. 열을 적용하는 방법은 전극 사이의 저항가열과 함께 마이크로파 및 고주파수 전력; 뜨거운 가스의 주입, 및 토양을 관통하는 전기의 전도를 포함한다. 열 주입 웰(well)로부터의 전도 열 전달은 예를 들어 U.S. 특허 Nos. 5,190,405 및 5,271,693 에 제안되어 있다. U.S. 특허 No. 5,271,693 은 증기가 층으로부터 추출되는 히터 웰 (heater well을 제안하고 있다. U.S. 특허 No. 5,449,251 은 지하 층으로부터 오염물질을 가열해서 그 후에 제거하기 위한 스팀 주입 웰 및 중압 추출 웰의 클러스터(cluster) 의 용도를 개시하고 있다.
상기 방법은, 통상 최초 위치로부터 오염물질이 회수될 수 있는 지점으로 오염물질이 이동하는 것을 조절하기 위해 표면에서 또는 증기 추출 웰보아(wellbore)에서 저압의 유지에 의존한다. 토양을 통한 증기의 상당한 유출의 흐름을 유발시키기 위해 필요한 비교적 큰 압력 차이 때문에, 낮은 가열 속도만이 상기 방법에 의해 적용될 수 있거나, 기화된 오염물질이 오염물질이 제거되는 방향 이외의 방향으로 최초에 오염된 토양으로부터 이탈되도록 하기에 충분한 압력이 기화된 오염물질이 존재하는 지점에 생긴다. 청구항 1 의 전제부에 따른 방법은 US 특허 명세서 No. 5,360,067 로부터 공지되어 있다. 상기 방법에서, 탄화수소 오염물질은 연소되고 연소 가스는 오염된 층 내에 재주입된다. 상기 공지된 방법은 여전히 연소되지 않은 기화된 오염물질이 오염된 층으로부터 다른 층으로 아래 방향으로 이동하게 되는 위험을 포함하고 있다. 따라서, 본 발명의 목적은 원위치 가열함으로써 오염된 토양으로부터 오염물질을 제거하는 방법에 관한 것으로서, 기화된 오염물질은 오염된 토양으로부터 아래로 이동하지 않는다.

상기 웰보아들은 바람직하게는 오염된 토양을 수직으로 관통하고 웰보아들을 통해 오염된 토양 내에서 발생된 증기의 제거를 위해 관통된다. 오염된 토양 아래의 토양 층이 오염된 토양 아래의 오염물질의 응축을 방지하기 위해 가열될 때, 오염된 토양 중 오염물질이 기화될 때, 오염물질은 아래로 이동하지 않지만, 표면 또는 회수용 관통 웰보아를 향해 강제된다는 것을 발견했다.
바람직한 실시태양의 설명
본 발명은 열적 정화 방법에서 기화된 오염물질의 포함 문제에 관한 것이다. 정화될 토양의 온도를 오염된 토양중의 액체의 비점 근처로 상승시키기 전에, 오염물질 아래의 토양 층을 가열하는 것은 증기가 아래로 이동하는 것을 효과적으로 막는다는 것을 발견했다.
본 발명의 방법에 의해 오염된 토양으로부터 제거될 수 있는 휘발성 오염물질은 다양한 오염물질이다. 통상의 휘발성 물질, 예컨대, 가솔린이라 추정되는 오염물질은 본 발명에 의해 정화될 수 있지만, 훨씬 더 무거운 탄화수소 및 고비점 물질은 본 발명에 의해 휘발되고 제거될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 가스 공장에 의해 생성된 폴리염소화 비페닐 ("PCB"), 수은, 및 중유는 본 발명에 의해 증기로서 제거될 수 있다. 온도가 상기 물질의 통상의 비점에 도달되지 않는 경우에도, 수증기는 생성될 것이고, 오염물질의 한계 증기압으로 인해 충분한 양의 스팀으로 오염물질이 제거될 것이다.
본 발명의 웰보아들은 오일 산업에서 이용되는 것과 같은 케이스화(cased)되고 시멘트화(cemented)된 웰보아일 수 있지만, 그와 같은 정교한 웰은 대부분의 적용 시 적절하지 않을 수 있다. 깨끗한 표토층 (overburden)이 층으로부터 제거되는 증기에 의해 오염되지 않도록 하기 위해 얇은 케이싱(casing)이 제공될 수 있다. 웰보아가 보아홀 (borehole) 의 하부로 케이스화 될 때, 오일 산업에서 공지된 방법에 따라 관통될 수 있다. 웰보아는 수직, 수평 또는 수직과 수평 사이의 각도로 기울어져 있을 수 있다.
웰보아로부터의 전도에 의해 오염된 토양, 바람직하게는 오염된 토양층의 토양 아래의 오염되지 않은 토양의 층에 열을 공급할 수 있다. 전도용 열을 층에 제공하기 위해 웰보아를 가열하는데 유용한 웰보아 히터는 공지되어 있다. 예를 들어, 가스불(gas fire) 웰보아 히터는 U.S. 특허 Nos. 2,902,270 및 3,181,613 에 기재되어 있는데 본원에 참고로 포함된다. 전기 웰보아 히터는 예를 들어 U.S. 특허 No. 5,060,287 에 개시되어 있는데, 여기에 참고로 포함된다. 바람직한 가스불 웰보아 히터는 예를 들어 U.S. 특허 No. 5,255,742 에 기재되어 있는데, 여기에 참고로 포함되어 있다.
열은 전도에 의해 오염된 토양에 적용되고, 웰보아로부터 증기를 포함하는 오염물질을 제거하기 위해 흡입원(源)으로서 또한 작용하는 웰보아로부터 적용되는 것이 바람직하다. 따라서, 이러한 바람직한 구현예에서, 오염물질이 응축할 수 있는 더욱 냉각된 토양으로 기화된 오염물질이 이동됨으로써 응축이 일어나는 곳의 오염물질의 농도를 증가시킬 수 있는 가능성없이, 기화된 오염물질이 층으로부터 직접 회수용 웰보아로 이동된다.
오염되지 않은 층은 뜨거운 유체, 예컨대, 스팀, 연소 가스 또는 가열된 질소의 주입에 의해 임의로 가열될 수 있다.
열이 토양에 적용될 때, 증기가 열에 의해 생길 때까지, 열은 통상 거의 생기지 않는다. 오염물질이 가벼운 휘발성 성분 (물의 비점보다 낮은 통상의 비점), 예컨대 가솔린이면, 최초에 발생된 증기는 비교적 높은 농도의 오염물질을 함유한다. 토양에 존재하는 물로부터 스팀이 발생될 때, 더 무거운 오염물질은 스팀 중 무거운 오염물질의 증기압으로 인해 기화될 수 있다. 압력이 오염된 토양에서 더 낮게 유지되면 될수록, 증기 중 무거운 오염물질의 농도는 더 크게 될 것이고, 따라서, 오염물질을 증발시키기 위해 주입될 열은 적게 필요할 것이다. 오염물질이 물과 혼화되지 않는다면, 스팀은 그 지점에서 토양 내의 압력에서 물의 비점 정도에서 발생될 것이다. 오염된 토양은, 오염되지 않은 층이 오염된 액체의 비점에 도달하기 전에, 가열될 수 있지만, 오염된 토양의 온도는 오염된 구역 내 액체의 비점 미만으로 유지되어 오염되지 않은 토양의 층이 상기 온도에 도달하기 전에 오염물질의 기화 (및 이에 따른 이동) 을 방지한다.
본 발명에 따른 웰은 수평 또는 수직 웰이다. 수직 웰은 오염된 토양을 통해 오염된 토양 아래의 오염되지 않은 층으로 연장되는 것이 바람직하다. 오염된 토양 아래의 깊이는 웰 사이의 거리를 고려해서 선택된다. 통상, 웰 사이의 거리의 약 1/3 이 오염되지 않은 층에 열을 주입하기 위해 오염물질 아래에 충분한 웰보아를 제공할 것이다. 본 발명의 바람직한 구현예에서, 웰은 층으로부터 기화된 물질을 제거하고 히터용 장소로서 도관을 제공한다. 토양으로부터 오염물질을 제거하기 위해 케이싱 (casing) 내에서 네가티브 압력이 유지되는 것이 바람직하다. 두 개의 가열 엘레멘트(heater element)는 각 케이싱에 제공될 수 있는데, 하나는 오염된 토양 내에 존재하고 있고, 다른 하나는 오염된 토양 아래의 층 내에 존재한다. 가열 엘레멘트는 오염된 토양을 통해 열을 제공할 수 있고, 오염된 토양 아래의 오염되지 않은 층 내로 임의로 연장될 수 있다. 임의로, 두 번째 가열 엘레멘트는 오염된 토양 아래의 웰보아의 부분에 열을 제공할 수 있다. 하나의 가열 엘레멘트가 제공될 수 있는데, 단, 오염된 토양 아래의 층 중 액체의 비점 정도의 온도가 오염된 토양의 아래에서 도달된 후 이 온도가 오염된 토양에서 도달되도록 하기 위해, 오염된 토양 아래에 더 큰 열(熱) 방출 (통상적으로, 단위 길이 당 약 50 % 초과의 열)을 제공하도록 상기 엘레멘트가 디자인되어야한다. 이는 상이한 엘레멘트 직경을 갖는 가열 엘레멘트를 제공함으로써 달성될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 니크롬선 가열 엘레멘트가 사용될 수 있는데, 이 엘레멘트는 오염된 구역에서 직경 0.32 cm 및 오염되지 않은 구역에서 직경 0.26 cm 를 갖는다. 바람직하게는, 별도의 히터가 제공하는데, 그 이유는 정화를 통한 열 유출에서 그러한 차이를 제공하는 것은 에너지적으로 비효율적이고, 케이싱 온도 제한 때문에 오염된 구역으로의 열 유출이 상당히 제한할 수 있기 때문이다. 또한, 별도의 히터가 이용될 때, 오염된 구역 아래의 층의 히터가 먼저 작동되고, 그 다음, 에너지 비용을 줄이기 위해 다른 히터가 이용되는 시간 중 적어도 일부 기간동안 작동을 멈춘다. 케이싱은 표토층(overburden)에서 단열될 수 있거나 증기로부터의 오염물질이 케이싱 내에서 응축하지 않는 것을 보장하기 위해 추가적인 히터가 설치될 수 있다.
전기 저항 히터가 언급될 수 있지만 다른 유형의 히터를 사용할 수 있다. 전기 히터는 조절하기 편리하고, 케이싱 내에 흐름선(flowline)을 필요로 하지 않기 때문에 오염된 토양으로부터 증기의 흐름용 공간을 더 남겨둔다.
열을 삽입하고 증기를 제거하기 위해 설치되는 추가적인 웰보아는 바람직하게는 오염된 토양 주위의 토양 내에 제공되어, 오염물질이 최초 오염된 토양으로부터 제거되지 않도록 한다.
오염된 토양은 표토층의 하부로서 나타나 있지만 토양이 표면까지 가열되면 표면 상부에 단열이 제공될 수 있다. 또한, 오염된 토양이 표면 근처로 연장된다면, 과량의 공기가 오염된 토양 내로 들어가는 것을 방지하기 위해 그리고 대기 중으로 오염된 증기가 날아가는 것을 방지하기 위해 표면 상에 증기 실(seal)을 제공하는 것이 유익하다. 오염된 토양이 표면까지 연장된다면, 표면 히터는 표면으로부터의 열을 제공할 수 있다.
증기는 오염된 토양 내로 연장하는 웰보아를 통해 제거되는 것이 바람직하고, 그 후 상기 증기는 당업계에 공지된 방법에 의해 오염물질을 제거하기 위해 처리될 수 있다. 예를 들어, 열적 산화제는 오염물질을 산화하기 위해 제공될 수 있고, 그 후 잔류 증기 스팀은 잔류 오염물질 및/또는 오염물질의 산화 생성물을 수집하기 위해 탄소 베드를 통과한다. 블로어 (blower) 는 통상 웰보아 및 층 내의 저(低)절대압력을 유지하기 위해 제공될 것이다. 저압력이 유익한 것은 저압력이 물과 오염물질이 오염된 토양에서 증발되는 온도를 감소시키기 때문이다. 감압(subatmospheric pressure)은 또한 증기가 대기로 달아나는 것을 방지한다.
히터 및 흡입 웰의 패턴은 균일한 열을 오염된 토양에 제공하고, 오염된 토양의 정화를 마무리하는데 필요한 시간을 감소시기 위해 바람직하게 제공될 수 있다. 삼각형 또는 사각형 패턴이 편리하게 제공될 수 있다. 사각형 또는 삼각형 패턴에서 웰 사이의 거리는 예를 들어 0.9 내지 6 m 이다. 이렇게 비교적으로 좁은 공간이 바람직한 것은 토양을 통한 전도에 의한 열 전달이 비교적 느리기 때문이다.

오염된 토양 아래로부터 오염된 토양을 가열하는 것의 중요성은, 깨끗한 하부 층에 채워진 젖은 모래 및 PCB 와 같은 오염물질을 모델화하기 위한 다양한 양의 윈터그린(wintergreen, 메틸 살리실레이트) 오일을 포함하는 상부 층을 갖는 모래 -충진 유리 칼럼에서 증명된다. 메틸 살리실레이트는 물보다 더 밀도가 높아서 물에 가라앉는 경향이 있다. 상기 장치는 내부 직경 7.6 cm 및 길이 91.5 cm의 유리 칼럼으로 구성된다. 진공이 상부에 적용될 수 있다. 약간의 진공 (약 2.54 cm 의 물) 이 윈터크린의 기화된 오일을 제거하기 위해 상기 칼럼 상부에서 유지되었다. 유연한 히터들로 상기 유리의 외부 주위를 감싸줌으로써 열이 적용되었으며, 상기 히터 주위를 두께 3.2 cm의 단열물로 감싸주었다. 상기 사용된 히터는 높이 30.5 cm 및 폭 43 cm 인 17 Ω저항의 히터로서, Minco Products Inc. (Houston, Texas, USA)로부터 이용할 수 있다. 하나의 히터는 상기 윈터그린 오일을 함유하는 구역 주위에서 감싸지고, 다른 히터는 상기 칼럼의 하부 구역 주위에서 감싸졌다. 본 발명의 실시예에서, 하부 히터를 먼저 작동하고, 깨끗한 모래의 온도가 윈터그린의 오일의 비점에 도달한 후 상부 히터를 작동하였다. 비교예 C1 - C3 에서, 하부 히터는 사용되지 않았다. 각 예에서, 깨끗한 모래는 유리 칼럼의 하부에 위치하고, 또 다른 모래의 부분은 윈터그린의 오일과 혼합되어 깨끗한 모래의 상부에 위치하였다. 가열은, 모래의 온도가 약 250 ℃ 에 도달할 때까지 계속되고, 그 후 칼럼은 냉각되고, 상부 및 하부의 모래 내에서 윈터그린 오일의 농도가 결정되었다.
하기 표는 실시예 1 - 10 및 비교예 C1 - C3 의 결과를 요약한 것이다. 최초 오일 함량은 칼럼의 상부 20 cm 에서의 윈터그린 오일의 중량% 이다. 최종 상부 오일 농도는, 상부 구역이 약 250 ℃로 가열된 다음 냉각된 후, 칼럼의 상부 구역으로부터의 샘플의 오일 함량이다. 칼럼의 하부의 최종 오일 함량은, 칼럼이 가열된 다음 냉각된 후, 칼럼의 하부 단면에서의 최대 오일 농도이다.
각 실시에서, 칼럼 내의 온도는, 물의 비점에 도달할 때까지 꾸준히 상승된 후, 물이 기화될 때까지 일정하게 유지되었다. 그 다음, 윈터그린 오일의 비점에 도달할 때까지 온도가 다시 꾸준히 상승된 후, 윈터그린 오일이 본질적으로 기화될 때까지 일정하게 유지된 다음, 다시 상승되었다.

비교예 C1, C2 및 C3 에서, 상부 구역 중 최초 오일 농도가 높을수록, 오염물질이 하부 깨끗한 모래 내로 더 응축하게 된다. 하부 구역이 먼저 가열되는 실시예(실시예 1, 2 및 3)에서, 오일은 하부 깨끗한 모래에서 실제로 응축하지 않는다.
Claims (11)
- 오염되지 않은 토양의 층 위에 존재하는 오염된 토양으로부터 휘발성 액체 오염물질을 제거하는 방법으로서,상기 방법은, 열 주입 웰보아는 오염된 토양을 관통하고 하나 이상의 웰보아는 오염되지 않은 층을 관통하도록 하나 이상의 웰보아들이 오염된 토양을 관통하는 단계를 포함하며; 하기 단계를 추가로 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법:- 오염된 층과 인접한 오염되지 않은 층의 많은 부분의 온도가 오염된 액체의 비점 이상일 때까지, 오염되지 않은 층 내 웰보아로부터 오염되지 않은 층으로 열을 적용하는 단계; 및- 오염된 토양 내 웰보아로부터 오염된 토양으로 열을 적용하는 단계로서, 오염된 토양의 온도는, 오염된 층과 인접한 오염되지 않은 층의 상당한 부분이 오염된 액체의 비점에 근접한 후, 오염된 액체의 비점으로 상승됨.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 흡입 웰보아 내에서 감압(subatmospheric pressure)이 유지되는 하나 이상의 흡입 웰보아를 통해 오염된 토양으로부터 기화된 오염물질을 제거하는 단계를 추가로 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 2 항에 있어서, 흡입 웰보아는 이로부터 오염된 토양으로 열이 적용되는 웰보아인 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 하나 이상의 웰보아가 오염된 토양을 관통하여 오염된 토양으로부터 오염되지 않은 층으로 연장되는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 3 항에 있어서, 흡입-히터(heater) 웰보아의 패턴이 제공되는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 5 항에 있어서, 패턴 내의 웰보아가 약 0.9 m 내지 약 6 m 떨어져 있는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 오염되지 않은 층을 관통하는 하나 이상의 웰보아가 본래 수평 웰보아인 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 오염되지 않은 층을 관통하는 하나 이상의 웰보아가 본래 오염된 토양도 관통하는 수직 웰보아인 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 열이 오염되지 않은 층 내 웰보아로부터 오염되지 않은 층에 적용되는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 1 항에 있어서, 오염된 토양이 오염되지 않은 토양 아래에 있고, 오염된 토양을 오염된 액체의 통상의 비점으로 가열하기 전에, 오염된 토양 위의 오염되지 않은 토양의 온도를, 오염된 액체의 통상의 비점 초과의 온도로 상승시키는 단계를 추가로 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
- 제 8 항에 있어서, 전기 가열 엘레멘트(element)로부터 오염된 토양 및 오염되지 않은 층으로 열이 적용되며, 상기 전기 가열 엘레멘트는 오염된 토양 내의 웰보아를 통해 오염되지 않은 층 내의 웰보아 내로 연장되고, 상기 전기 가열 엘레멘트가 오염되지 않은 층 보다 오염된 토양 내에서 더 큰 직경을 갖는 와이어(wire)인 것을 특징으로 하는 방법.
