Abstract

Description
본 발명은 디스플레이에 관한 것으로, 보다 구체적으로는, 고품위 디스플레이(HDD), 또는 고품위 텔레비전(HDTV) 디스플레이에 관한 것이다.
디스플레이 분야의 여러 가지 현재 기술에 있어서, 이러한 기술들이 새로운 표준안에 적응되기 위해 시도되고 있지만, HDTV는 이들의 문제점을 지적한다. 주요한 형태의 디스플레이 시스템은 음극선관(CRT), 및 액정 디스플레이(LCD)이다. 이들 각각은 HDTV요건들을 보다 명백하게 하는 취약점을 갖고 있다.
CRT
음극선관 디스플레이는 가장 흔한 형태의 디스플레이로, 텔레비전, 컴퓨터 모니터, 및 많은 다른 디스플레이 태스크와 같이 보편적으로 받아들여진다.
전형적으로, CRT는 여러 가지 형광 물질로 처리된 유리부의 후면을 가로질러 좌우로 소인(sweep)하는 단일 전자총 또는 전자총들에 의해 작동한다. 총으로부터의 에너지가 형광 물질과 접촉하면 형광 물질이 발광하여 스크린 상에 이미지를 생성한다. 현재의 U.S. TV 표준(NTSC)은 대략 480개의 수평 라인을 따라 이미지를 디스플레이 한다. 이미지 데이터는 간삽(interleaving)되는데 이는 홀수 라인이 하나의 시간 주기에 표시되고, 이어서 다음 시간 주기에 짝수 라인이 표시된다는 것을 의미한다 (현재의 유럽 표준이 이와 유사하며, 대략 576 수평 라인을 갖는다). 상술한 시간 및 라인 수는 현재의 표준 해상도 텔레비전에 관한 것이다. 그러나, 몇몇의 HDTV 및 EDTV(강화된 고품위 텔레비전) 표준은 간삽되지 않고 연속적으로 주사된다. 이것은 데이터가 1, 2, 3, ... 등의 라인 순서로 표시됨을 의미한다. 따라서, 먼저 240 라인을 표시하는 데 유효한 시간 내에, EDTV 및 HDTV는 각각 480 또는 960 라인을 표시하지 않으면 안 된다. 이러한 상황에서는 픽셀 일시정지(dwell) 시간이 각각 2 또는 4 인수만큼 떨어지게 되어 각 픽셀의 명도를 저하시키는데 그 이유는 각 픽셀이 에너지를 덜 받기 때문이다. 게다가, HDTV는 종횡비가 4:3 대신에 16:9이므로, 라인이 보다 길어져서 결국 픽셀당 시간이 짧아지게 된다.
따라서, HDTV에 CRT를 사용하는 것은 만족스럽지 못할 수도 있다. 몇몇의 보상책을 강구하지 않으면, 명도는 적어도 4인수만큼 떨어지게 될 것이다. CRT는 이미 충분히 발전된 기술이므로, 상당한 산업적인 노력으로도 HDTV 디스플레이에서 표준 CRT의 명도 레벨을 달성할 가망성은 거의 없다. 따라서, HDTV 디스플레이는명도에 있어서, 표준 텔레비전 세트에 비해 별로 좋지 않고, 소비자의 선호도도 좋지 않게 된다. 상술한 바와 같은 이유로 인해, CRT는 HDTV용으로서 적절하지 못하며 LCD로 전향하지 않으면 안 된다.
LCD
액정 디스플레이 디바이스는 개개의 어드레싱 가능 셀을 갖고 있기 때문에 큰 장점이 있다. 이들 개개의 셀은 디스플레이 환경에서 개개의 제어 가능한 화소, 또는 픽셀이 된다. HDTV에 적용하기 위해서는, 셀의 수가 증가해야 하지만, 반드시 이러한 픽셀 증가와 관련된 명도의 감소가 발생하는 것은 아니다. 그러나, LCD에는 다른 상호 관련된 문제점들이 있다. 먼저, 이들 문제점들 중 하나는 낮은 제조수율, 및 이로 인한 가격 상승이다. 두 번째는 낮은 전송 효율이다. 세 번째 및 네 번째는 응답 시간이 길고 콘트라스트 비가 낮다는 것이다.
몇몇 요인들은 LCD 비용을 상승시키는 원인이 된다. 가장 큰 요인은 제조단계에서의 낮은 수율이다. 픽셀 어드레싱 트랜지스터들은 유리 기판 상에서 만들어져야 한다. 전형적으로, 이들 기판들은 크고 조정하기가 어려우며, 보통은 표준 실리콘 공정 기술을 공유할 수 없거나 표준 실리콘 공정 장비를 사용할 수 없다. 그러므로, 제조 공정은 실리콘 공정 산업 규모의 경제에서는 유리할 수 없다. 완성된 LCD는 복잡한 물리적 조립을 필요로 하고, 또한 대등한 실리콘 패키징 공정을 공유할 수 없다. 또한, LCD 물질들은 그 자체가 비싸며, 물질 그 자체를 제조하기에도 비싸다.
전형적으로, LCD는 결정 물질이 개재된 2개의 유리 패널들로 구성된다. 유리기판들 중 하나 또는 둘 모두는 결정 물질을 활성화시키는 전극들로서 기능하는 트랜지스터들을 갖는다. 전극이 활성화되면, 극 축을 따라 배열된 결정들이 층마다 트위스트된다. 그 효과는, LCD의 한 측 상의 편광기를 통해 입사된 광선이 트위스트된 결정들을 통과하여 제2 편광기에 흡수됨으로써, 암 픽셀들을 발생시키는 것이다. 광선은 결정 매트릭스로 들어가기 전에 편광되어야 한다. 전형적으로, 디스플레이의 전방 패널 상의 편광 코팅으로 이를 달성한다. 이들 2개의 편광기에서의 흡수는 전형적으로 입사 조명의 약 60% 이상의 감소분을 차지하므로, LCD를 비효율적으로 만든다.
결정들을 트위스트시키는 공정은 자체적으로 문제점을 갖고 있다. 전극 신호들에 대한 결정들의 응답 시간이 약 30 ms 정도 느리다. 상술한 바와 같이, 디스플레이에 필요한 정보량이 많아질수록, 그로 인하여 HDTV는 디스플레이 시 느려지는 것이 아니라 보다 빨라진 응답 시간을 요구하게 될 것이다. LCD가 디스플레이 자체 내부에서의 투과광의 소광(extinction)에 종속되므로, 흡수된 방사로 인해 디바이스가 가열되는 것이 우려된다. 또한, LCD는, 비효율적이게 하는 낮은 퍼센트의 활성 영역들을 갖는다.
고가, 저효율, 느린 응답 시간, 및 낮은 콘트라스트 비 때문에, LCD는 HDTV에 적합하지 않다. HDTV는 다양한 소비자들에게 이용 가능해야 하며, 현재의 텔레비전 세트에 대해 현저한 차이가 있어야 한다. LCD와 CRT로서 상기 장점을 달성하기는 어렵다.
그러므로, HDTV는 양호한 명도, 저가, 제조의 용이성, 및 여러 가지 표준들의 텔레비전 방송 포맷들에 적응할 수 있는 유연성을 갖는 디스플레이 기술을 필요로 한다.

빔형 DMD에서는, ON 또는 "1" 상태가 두 개의 균일한 각 중 한 개의 각으로 완전히 기울어지고, OFF 또는 "0" 상태가 상기 두 개의 각 중 다른 각으로 완전히 기울어지기 때문에, 디지털 동작은 상기 문제를 제거한다. 이와 유사하게, 막형 DMD에서는, 두 가지 구별되는 상태가 존재하는데, 각각의 상태는 두 개의 디지털상태(ON 또는 OFF) 중 한 상태를 나타낸다 이들 두 상태는 균일(flat)한 상태와 완전히 변형된 상태를 포함한다.
디지털 모드에서, DMD 미러의 고속 스위칭 시간으로 인해, 광선을 투사 광학계로 반사시켜 디스플레이 된 이미지의 강도를 증가시키게 되거나, 또는 광선을 투사 광학계로부터 벗어나도록 반사시키는 위치 사이에서 상기 상태들이 변경될 수 있다. 디지털 모드에서의 디바이스의 동작에 대해서는 상세히 후술할 것이다. 기본적으로, 투사된 이미지의 특정 픽셀에 대응하는, 본 디바이스의 미러 각각은 미러 셀 각각이 ON 및 OFF로 스위칭하는 2진 방식으로 동작한다. 미러의 ON 상태 시간이 길수록 그에 대응하는 픽셀은 더욱 밝아진다.
ON 시간은 디지털화 된 이미지의 강도 레벨에 직접 비례한다. 시청자의 눈은 화면상에 투사된 픽셀 위치 각각의 시변 강도 레벨을 종합하여 완벽한 아날로그 이미지 표현을 얻는다. 시변 색 필터 (이를테면, 색 휠(wheel))를 사용하고, 적당한 적색, 녹색, 및 청색의 강도가 필터링 된 적색, 녹색, 및 청색의 조도에 동기화되면, 하나의 DMD는 이러한 형태로 모든 색상의 이미지를 생성할 수 있다. 한 색에 하나씩의 3-칩 시스템, 색 휠과 같은 필터를 사용하는 단일 칩 시스템, 및 심지어 한 디바이스는 두 색상 사이에서 스위칭하고 다른 디바이스는 한 색상을 투사하는 2-칩 시스템을 포함하는 디지털 DMD를 사용하여 몇 가지 선택이 가능하다. 제7A도 내지 제7C도를 참조하여 광학적인 고찰을 더 논한다.
명도와 색상을 종합하는 데에 있어 시청자의 눈에 의존하는 디바이스를 사용함에 있어서는 대역폭 문제가 발생한다. 이 디바이스는 깜박거림을 느낄 수 없을만큼 고속으로 스위칭 하여 모든 이미지 데이터를 모든 색상으로 디스플레이 하여야 한다. 한 색에 하나씩 3개의 DMD를 갖는 시스템은 낮은 대역폭을 갖는다. 3개 의 DMD는 실제로 물리적으로 분리된 칩이거나, 또는 하나의 큰 디바이스 상의 3 영역 상에 있을 수 있겠으나, 매 16 7 ms 비디오 프레임 동안 수십만 개의 미러를 수백 번 ON OFF스위칭 하는 데 유효한 대역폭을 여전히 필요로 할 것이다.
3개의 칩으로 한다면 단일 칩으로 한 것에 비해서 대역폭을 감소시킬 수 있으나, 이렇게 하면 별도의 비용을 발생시키게 된다. 처리된 실리콘 웨이퍼 가격을 1000달러라고 하면, 한 웨이퍼에 12개의 칩이 들어맞을 수 있는 이러한 크기의 칩은 33 %의 칩 수율 및 각 디바이스당 비용은 250달러가 된다. 패키지된 칩 가격은 약 350달러가 될 것이다. 그러면, 3-칩 시스템의 가격은 임의의 다른 전자 기능의 필요성을 생각하기도 전에 1050달러가 될 것이다. 이것은 소비자용 시스템으로 하기에는 받아들여 질 수 없는 출발점으로 보인다. 다른 선택이라면 동일 디바이스상에 3개의 영역을 갖게 하는 것이다. 그러나, 디바이스의 크기는 이제 3배가 될 것이며, 웨이퍼마다 단지 4개의 디바이스만이 가능할 것이다. 동일하게 가정된 수율에 따르면 패키지하지 않은 상태에서의 웨이퍼당 한 개의 디바이스 비용은 1000달러가 된다.
수율을 상승시키면 이러한 비용은 당연히 내려가지만, 비용을 실제로 감소시킬 수 있을 때까지는 하나의 디바이스로 색-순차(color sequencing) 방법을 사용하는 것이 좋을 것이다. 이 때 대역폭 문제가 우려된다. 즉, 요구되는 비디오속도로 모든 색 이미지를 충분히 달성할 수 있는 I/O 능력을 갖는 합리적인 가격의 칩을만들 수 있을 것인가? 하나의 프레임 시간은 16.7 ms이기 때문에, 각각의 색은 디스플레이를 위해서 프레임의 1/3, 혹은 5.5 ms가 된다. 8 비트의 색 분해능을 달성하기 위해서는 이러한 5500 μs는 21 μs구간의 256 각각의 시간 윈도우로 분할되어야 한다. 디지털 DMD는 10 μs의 움직임(in-motion) 또는 비행(flight) 시간을 갖는다. 그러므로, DMD가 한 상태에서 다른 상태로 이동되고, 그 시간 간격동안 ON 또는 OFF되어 복귀될 수 있는 이용 가능한 충분한 시간이 있다.
전체 DMD가 이러한 21 μs 구간 안에 어드레싱되기 위해서는 하이 데이터 I/O 대역폭이 제공되어야 한다. 2048 x 1152 픽셀 디바이스에 대한 하나의 전위구성은 디바이스의 상부에서는 512개의 입력 핀에, 그리고 디바이스의 하부에서는 512개의 핀에 1대4 인수(one-to-four factor)로 디멀티플렉싱 된 각각의 입력을 제공한다. 데이터의 4개의 비트가 각각의 핀에 로드되면, 데이터의 2개의 완전한 2048 비트 라인이 DMD 픽셀 어레이로 로드될 수 있다. 21 μs내에 디바이스를 어드레싱하기 위해, 디바이스의 상부 및 하부 내의 각각의 576개의 행들이 36 ns 내에 어드레싱되어야 한다. 36 ns 내에 각각의 핀에 4 비트를 제공하는 것은 핀당 107 MHz의 데이터 속도를 필요로 한다. 비록 문제가 될지라도 이들 핀 수와 데이터 속도가 달성될 수 있고, 단일 칩 DMD 기반의(DMD-based) 모든 디지털 고해상(HD) 디스플레이 시스템이 달성 가능하다는 것을 보여준다.
512개의 입력 핀들을 갖는 DMD를, 입력 신호를 제공하는 메모리들로부터 멀리 떨어져 장착하는 것은 불편하며, DMD, 메모리들 및 신호 처리 회로들을 보유하고 있기 위한 크기의 회로 보드를 광학 시스템내에 일체화시키는 것도 불편할 것이다. 따라서, DMD와 메모리들을 신호 처리 보드로부터 멀리 떨어진 하이브리드 모듈 내에 일체화시키는 것이 바람직할 것이다, 이 모듈에 대한 하나의 가능한 구성이 기술된다.
DMD는 전형적으로 제2도에 도시된 바와 같은 세라믹 칩 캐리어(200)에 장착되어야 한다. 이 디바이스는 보호 윈도우(204)를 지지하는 링(202)에 의해 둘러싸여 있고, 불활성 가스 환경은 윈도우와 세라믹 기판 사이에 봉합된다. DMD 입력포트들은 링 하부를 통과하는 트레이스에 결합되고, 칩과 32개의 프레임 버퍼 RAM(206a 및 206b)를 상호 접속한다. 프레임 버퍼 RAM(FRAM)들은 236만개 픽셀 각각에서 적색, 녹색, 또는 청색용 강도 데이터로 DMD를 끊임없이 리프레시한다. 이들 버퍼들은 비디오 랜덤 액세스 메모리(VRAM)들 또는 선입선출(FIFO) 버퍼들과 같은 임의의 유형의 랜덤 액세스 메모리(RAM)들일 수 있다. 이 실시예에서는, 7 비트 데이터가 가정되어, 4950만개의 비트들(3 프레임 x 2048 x 1152 x 7 비트)의 전체 FRAM 용량을 요구한다. 따라서, 32개의 FRAM 각각은 1.55 Mbit 용량으로 구성될 수 있다. 8비트 비디오 데이터는 1.77 Mbit 용량으로 이루어진 32개의 FRAM을 필요로 한다. 현재 메모리 기술로 이들 조건을 달성할 수 있다.
각각의 FRAM은 DMD 입력 핀들 중 32개를 공급하고, DMD 픽셀들의 각각의 행은 일련의 길이 변화 클릭 펄스(varying-length clock pulse)에 의해 차례로 어드레싱되어야 한다. 제3도에 도시된 바와 같이, 최상위 강도 비트(MSB)는 리프레시 주기의 거의 반주기 동안 픽셀에 로드되고, 리프레시 주기의 1/4주기 동안에는 제2 MSB가 로드되는 방식으로 이루어진다. 따라서 디지털 강도 값은 픽셀의 듀티 사이클을 직접 어드레싱하는 데 사용된다. FRAM들의 2개의 뱅크는 매 16.7 ms마다 갱신되어야 하는데, 이는 8비트 시스템에서 초당 3.4 Gbit의 데이터 속도를 필요로 한다. 4개의 디스플레이 사분면의 각각에 공급되는 4배의 32비트 데이터 버스들을 가정하면, 완전하게 달성할 수 있는 비율인 와이어 데이터 속도당 26.5 MHz를 산출한다.
디지털 색 동작이 가능하고, 적절한 DMD 및 지지 회로가 실현 가능하다는 것을 결정하는 것은, 상세한 DMD 동작을 논의하는 데 도움이 된다. 제4도는 어레이 (400)의 일부를 도시한다. 기판(402)은 전형적으로 실리콘이고, CMOS 어드레싱 회로가 있다. 어드레싱 회로의 상부에는 랜딩(landing) 전극(404) 및 어드레싱 전극 (406)용으로 적절하게 패터닝된 금속층을 남겨 둔다.
전극 상에 현수된 미러 소자(408)의 전형적인 처리 시퀀스는 다음에 기술한다. 전극은 약 2 마이크론 두께의 중합체층으로 덮힌 다음, 중합체 코팅이 경화된다. 중합체는 기판에 리드하는 비아(vias)를 형성하도록 패턴닝된다. 힌지 금속 (410)이 증착된 다음, 산화물층이 힌지층 상에 증착되고 이 공정 후에 형성될 힌지의 형태로 패턴닝된다. 두꺼운 금속층은 산화 힌지 마스크 상에 증착된다. 이 층의 상부 표면은 미러 표면이다. 미리 패턴닝 된 비아를 채운 2개의 금속층은 최후에 기판 상의 미러층을 지지하도록 포스트를 형성한다. 미러 금속이 패턴닝된 다음, 산화물층은 얇은 힌지 금속이 에칭 동안 제거되지 않도록 보호한다. 어레이는 미러 바로 아래의 중합체를 제거하도록 플라즈마 에칭하여 포스트/비아의 상부와 미러를 접속하도록 힌지를 둘 수 있다.
DMB의 상술한 구조는 토션 힌지(torsion-hinge)라 칭한다. 하나의 힌지에 의해 지지되는 캔틸레버(cantilever) 빔 및 4개의 힌지에 의해 지지되는 플렉서 빔을 포함하는 다른 구조가 존재한다. 캔틸레버 빔은 다이빙 보드와 유사한 모션을 하고, 플렉서 빔은 피스톤과 유사하다. 이들 구조들 중 하나는, 시스템의 상이한 모션 특성을 허용하도록 광학계를 조정하는 DMD 디스플레이 시스템에 사용될 수 있다.
또한, 구조의 동작은 캔틸레버 및 플렉서 빔 구조가 전형적으로 하나의 어드레싱 전극을 갖고 있는 것을 제외하고는 유사하다. 토션 빔은, 평탄하거나, 한 측에 대해 트위스트되거나, 또는 다른 쪽에 대해 트위스트된 3개의 디지털적으로 어드레싱 된 상태를 갖고 있다는 점에서 유일하다. 토션 빔의 측면도가 제5도에 도시되어 있다.
제5도에 있어서, 좌측 열 선택 라인(502a)이 활성화된 경우, 열 어드레싱 전극(506a) 상의 전압에 위치한다. 전압은 미러 소자(508)와 어드레싱 전극(506a)사이에서의 정전기적 인력의 원인이 된다. 미러(508)는 편향되고, 상부는 좌측 랜딩 전극(504a) 상에 랜드된다. 랜딩 전극(504a 및 504b)은 어드레싱 회로에 손상이 발생하거나, 미러를 랜딩 전극에 고정되게 할 수 있는 여러 가지 쇼팅 또는 전류 흐름을 방지하도록 미러(508)에서 동일 전압으로 유지된다.
미러가 편향된 경우, 그 다음 입사 광은 각으로 편향될 수 있다. 미러 소자는 좌측으로 편향될 때와 동일 방식으로 우측으로 편향될 수 있다. OFF 상태 내의 미러로부터의 광을 ON 상태 미러용의 영상 시스템 내로 도달하지 못하도록 2방향중어느 것도 ON 및 OFF될 수 없는 많은 장점을 갖고 있다.
DMD 레이아웃은 제6도에 도시되어 있다. 2048 x 1152 픽셀의 중앙 어레이(600)는 CMOS DRAM 회로에 의해 어드레싱 된다. 큰 셀 크기(20 μm)는 큰 칩 크기에 손실되는 수율을 벌충하는데 필요한 완화된 설계 규칙 회로를 사용할 수 있다. 상부 576 라인은 칩의 상부에서 4:1 디멀티플레서(602a)로 512 라인에서 2048 라인까지 어드레싱 된다. 제2 디멀티플렉서(602b)는 저부 576 라인을 공급한다. 결과적으로 얻게 되는 1024 입력 라인은 107 MHz로 공급되기 때문에, 디멀티플렉서 출력은 26.8 MHz에서 가동한다. 이 26.8 MHz 라인 속도는 46.5 kHz 프레임 속도로 산출된다.
46.5 kHz의 프레임 속도는 디스플레이가 단일 색-순차 비디오 프레임 동안 256번 갱신되도록 하는 데 적합하다. 따라서, 단일 DMD 칩을 기초로 한 투사기 (projector)는 비디오 프레임을 3개의 시간-슬라이스(time-slice)로 분할하여 3개의 시간-슬라이스에서 조사광을 순차적으로 적색, 녹색 및, 청색으로 필터링 한다. 각각의 시간-슬라이스 내에서, 강도는 256개의 불연속 간격의 해상도로 펄스 폭 변조(PWM)될 것이다. 그러므로, 전체 투사기 콘트라스트 비는 각각 3가지 색(triad color)에서 각각 256 불연속 스텝내의 각각의 픽셀에서 이용될 수 있다.
DMD 입력 디멀티플렉서는 26.8 MHz 라인 속도를 달성하기 위해 107 MHz 입력 데이터 스트림을 지지할 수 있어야 한다. 실제로, 이러한 데이터 속도가 연속적으로 유지될 필요는 없다. 제3도에 도시된 바와 같이, DMD로 전송될 그레이 스케일 데이터의 8비트는 5.5 msec의 1/3 프레임 시간에서 256시간 슬라이스를 제어하는데적합하다. 각각의 픽셀에 대한 1 비트의 데이터 (최상위 비트 또는 MSB)는 1/3 프레임 시간의 처음에서 DMD로 전송된다. 데이터의 다음 MSB는 1/3 프레임 시간동안 1/2 방식(one-half way)으로 모든 픽셀에 전송된다. 3/4 프레임 시간(1/2 + 1/4)에서, 제3 최상위 비트 등 및 모든 8비트까지 DMD로 전송된다. 각각의 비트는 각 비트의 상대적인 가중치(weighting)에 비례하는 시간량에 대해 각 픽셀의 온/오프 상태를 결정하도록 해준다.
이러한 형태의 어드레싱은 DMD로 전송될 데이터의 평균 대역폭을 감소시키지만, DMD에 대한 데이터가 픽셀 면(plane)보다는 비트 면에 있게 되는 것이 필요하다. 그러므로, DMD 기판 상의 메모리와 조합하여 제1도에 도시된 버퍼 메모리는, 메모리의 입력에서 수신된 픽셀 면 포맷에서 메모리의 출력에 의해 필요하게 된 비트 면 포맷으로 데이터를 재순차시키는 데이터 재포맷 특성을 구비하고 있어야만 한다.
이러한 어드레싱 방법에 의해 제공된 효율성 때문에, 단일 멀티플렉서에 의해 구동되는 576 라인들 각각은 5.5 ms의 1/3 프레임 세그먼트에서 8배만이 어드레싱되어야 한다. 이는, DMD 어레이의 각각의 수직 컬럼에서 838 kHz의 시간 평균 데이터와 동일하게 하여, 2개의 512-비트 폭 DMD 입력 데이터 포트에서 핀당 3.35 MHz로 4X 데이터 속도를 야기한다. 따라서, 각각의 DMD 데이터 핀 내부의 메모리 버퍼층은 피크 입력 데이터 속도를 107 MHz에서 3.35 MHz의 평균 데이터 속도로 낮출 수 있다. 각각의 입력 데이터 핀에서 버퍼의 1개의 층은 필요한 입력 데이터 속도를 107 MHz에서 53.5 MHz로 낮출 수 있다. 2 비트의 버퍼는 이러한 속도를 27.7MHz 등으로 낮출 수 있다.
고해상도 색 디스플레이용으로 필요한 바와 같이 DMD를 어드레싱할 수 있도록 하기 위해서는 최적의 시스템 설계에서와 같이 몇몇의 옵션을 남겨 둔다. 이러한 몇몇의 예들은 제7A도 내지 제7C도에 도시되어 있다. 제7A도는 3개의 칩 시스템을 도시한 것으로서, 각각의 디바이스는 적절한 색의 자체 조도를 갖고 있다. 설명할 목적으로, 도면의 하부로 향해 있는 픽처(picture)는 "청색" 시스템으로서 기술될 것이다. 광원(704a)은 실제로 청색 전구일 수 있는 청색 광원, 또는 청색 필터를 갖고 있는 백색 광원일 수 있다. 광원(704a)으로부터의 광은 렌즈(706a)에 의해 확대되어 청색 필터(708a)를 통하여 투과된다. 청색 광은 그 후 청색 디바이스 (702a)의 표면과 충돌한다. 청색 디바이스(702a) 상의 개별적인 각각의 미러는 화면 상의 스폿을 나타낸다. 시간에 따른 스냅쇼트(snapshot)가 제7A도에서 미러에 의해 도시된다.

이 개별 색 시스템은 이 예에서 녹색 및 적색 광에 대해 복제된다. 완전하게하기 위해, 광원(704b)의 시스템은 녹색 광 시스템이고, 광원(704c)의 시스템은 적색 광 시스템이다. 이들 시스템은 필요한 대로 배치될 수 있고, 여기에 도시된 위치에 놓일 필요는 없다. 적절히 배치되어 필터링 될 때, 광의 3가지 색의 빔이 단일 백색 광원으로부터 유도될 수 있다.
3-칩 시스템이 바람직하다 데에는 몇 가지 이유가 있다. 시스템의 크기 및 사용된 광학 소자에 따라, 보다 높은 명도와 보다 좋은 최종 픽처를 얻을 수 있다. 그러나, 앞서 설명한 바와 같이, 이것은 매우 비용이 많이 들 수 있다. 3개의 디바이스를 사용하면, 필터 및 광학 시스템이 낮은 단부 또는 소형 시스템으로 하기위해 너무 비용이 많이 들거나 또는 너무 크다는 것이 판명되었다. 가능한 여러 가지 선택의 다른 예가 제7B도에 도시된다.
제7B도의 광원(704)은 백색 광원이다. 광은 콘덴서 조립체(706) 및 색 필터(708)를 통과하는데 청색, 적색, 및 녹색 광을 디바이스(702)에 제공할 수 있어야 한다. 이것을 달성하기 위한 한가지 방법은 색 휠을 사용하고 휠의 색 순차에 대응하도록 디바이스 상에 있는 데이터의 타이밍을 맞추는 것이다. 광을 순차시키는 이러한 방식은 디바이스(702)가 개별적으로 각 색에 대한 데이터를 "처리" (필요한 횟수로 픽셀을 턴 온 및 오프시킨다)하는 것을 필요로 한다. 다시, 각 색에 대해 화면(716)으로 가는 광은 이미징 렌즈(714)를 통하여 경로(710)를 따를 것이다. 화면으로 전송되지 않는 각 색에 대한 광은 경로(712)를 따라 진행할 것이다. 순차되어야 하는 데이터의 양으로 인해 여기서 처리하는 데이터는 보다 복잡하지만, 광학 시스템은 3-칩 시스템보다 훨씬 간단하다.
상기 두 시스템 사이의 중간 시스템인 2-칩 시스템이 예로서 제7C도에 도시되어 있다. 디바이스(702b)는 2개의 광원(704b 또는 704c) 중 하나로부터 광을 보낸다. 미러가 한쪽 방향으로 편향된다면, 청색 시스템(704c, 706c, 708c)으로부터의 광은 화면(716)으로 반사된다. 미러가 다른 쪽 방향으로 편향된다면, 적색 시스템(704b, 706b 708b)으로부터의 광은 화면(716)으로 반사된다. 경로(712c)는 적색 시스템으로부터의 사용되지 않은 광을 나타내고 (712b)는 청색 시스템으로부터의 사용되지 않은 광을 나타낸다. 사용되지 않은 광은 비편향된 미러, 및 DMD 구조의 힌지 및 포스트에서 반사된다. 광원(704a)으로부터의 광은 이미지의 녹색부를 제공하도록 (708a)에 의해 필터링 되다. 녹색에 대한 눈의 증가된 감도로 인해 시스템은 녹색 광에 전용된다. 3칩 시스템에서와 같이, 광학계는 모든 광학 트레인용으로 하나의 광원을 사용하도록 재배열될 수 있다.
상기 밝힌 바와 같이, DMD와 같은 디지털 공간 광 변조기를 사용하면 시스템부은 설계자가 다양한 시스템 설계 또는 구성을 선택할 수 있게 한다. DMD 기반 디스플레이는 빠른 응답 시간, 낮은 비용 및 보다 나은 선명도, 및 필적할만한 명도 및 콘트라스트의 상술한 장점을 가진다. 또한, 앞서 밝힌 바와 같이, 모든 다른 형태의 디스플레이가 요구 및 요망에 따라 적응될 수 있다.

- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 디지털화된 비디오 데이터의 소스는 수신기, 튜너, 및 디지털화기를 더 포함하는 디스플레이 시스템.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 디지털화된 비디오 데이터의 소스는 수신기 및 튜너를 더 포함하는 디스플레이 시스템.
- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 디지털 비디오 데이터 소스가 비-방송 아날로그 비디오 소스인 디스플레이 시스템.

- 제1항에 있어서, 상기 적어도 하나의 디지털 마이크로미러 디바이스가 2개의 디지털 마이크로미러 디바이스, 즉 적색, 녹색, 또는 청색 중 두 가지 색을 수신하기 위한 디지털 마이크로미러 디바이스와, 그 나머지 색을 수신하기 위한 디지털 마이크로미러 디바이스를 더 포함하는 디스플레이 시스템.

- 제14항에 있어서, 상기 디지털화된 비디오 데이터의 소스는 수신기, 튜너, 및 디지털화기를 더 포함하는 디스플레이 시스템.
- 제14항에 있어서, 상기 디지털화된 비디오 데이터의 소스는 수신기, 및 튜너를 더 포함하는 디스플레이 시스템.
