Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a siliceous powder suitable especially as a concrete admixture, by reacting siliceous powder with an activation agent such as ammonia or aliphatic amine and removing the activation agent from the reaction product. CONSTITUTION:Siliceous powder is activated by contacting with ammonia (e.g. aqueous solution of NH3 or NH3 gas) or an aliphatic amine (e.g. primary amine, secondary amine or aliphatic amine having unsaturated carbon bond). The contact treatment is carried out e.g. in the case of an aqueous solution of NH3 by mixing silica powder with 0-5wt.% of an aqueous solution of NH3 having a concentration of about 1-6N, leaving standing, and stirring or agitating the mixture for 30min-5hr. The activated siliceous powder is heat-treated or evacuated to evaporate and recover the activation agent. The compounding of the obtained siliceous powder to cement mortar or concrete is effective in improving the early strength of concrete, remarkably decreasing the hydration heat and shrinkage and increasing the density of the concrete.
