Abstract
PURPOSE:To transmit a beam of light by reducing propagation loss, by using a graded index type fiber whose one end is connected to a light emitting diode and whose other end is contracted in tapered shape and is formed in a core diameter which almost coincides with that of a single mode fiber to be connected. CONSTITUTION:The titled fiber is constituted of the graded index type fiber 1 whose one end is connected to the light emitting diode 3 and whose other end is contracted in the tapered shape and is formed in the core diameter which almost coincides with that of the single mode fiber 2 to be connected, and the single mode fiber 2 whose one end is connected to the other end of the graded index type fiber. Therefore, the beam of light from the light emitting diode 3 is made incident on the graded index type fiber 1 first, and is propagated through the tapered part, then, it is transmitted to the single mode fiber 2, however, since the graded index type fiber and the single mode fiber are connected so as not to generate a difference between their core diameters, transmission loss can be reduced. As a result, it is possible to use the light emitting diode inexpensive and stabilized in performance as the light emitting element of the single mode fiber.
