Abstract
PURPOSE: To enhance the efficiency of light inserting and light branching at transmitting and receiving ends greatly, by providing a taper end in an optical fiber for transmission in the case of bidirectional transmission of optical signals with solid optical fibers.
CONSTITUTION: A first optical fiber 10 for transmission has a light emitting device 40 provided at one end thereof, and the other end is bonded with a second optical fiber 20 for reception, which has a photo detector connected to one end, by cutting biased along the optical axis of the second optical fiber 20. And there is a third optical fiber 30 for transmission which has a core 33 larger in diameter than a core 21 of the second optical fiber 20 and smaller number of openings, with its end shaped in a taper. The other end of the second optical fiber 20 is coaxially bonded with the tapered end of the third optical fiber 30, and a photo detector 60 is provided in the outer circumference of a clad 22 at the joint thereof. By so constituting, the transmitted light is transformed by the taper end into a waveguide angle suited to the third optical fiber 30 having smaller number of openings, so that the majority of the reaching light is received outside of the taper end. Hence, without loss in both transmitted and received light, the transmission efficiency may be greatly enhanced.
