Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent eutrophication of closed or semi-closed waters such as lakes and deep bays due to nitrogen and phosphorus present in the sewage and waste water discharged into said waters, by mixing an active sludge which has been inclusion-immobilized upon a polymer with original water to be treated, thereby raising a BOD-volume load in a treatment for exposure to air. CONSTITUTION:An active sludge which has been inclusion-immobilized fixed upon a polymer such as PVA is introduced into a tank 2 for exposure to air and mixed therein with original water to be treated, and the BOD-volume load is maintained at a value as high as 2-10kg- BOD/m<3>.day. As a result, most of the biochemically oxygen-demanding components (BOD components) in the original water are decomposed by this active sludge and part of them are adsorbed onto the active sludge. Subsequently, this inclusion-immobilized active sludge having BOD components adsorbed thereonto is introduced into a tank 10 for denitrification and mixed therein with original water to be treated, and the adsorbed BOD components are utilized as a hydrogen donor for denitrification to reduce NO3-N to N2. The resulting inclusion-immobilized active sludge is recovered from the water which has undergone the denitrification treatment, and is introduced into a tank 18 for anaerobic dephosphorization and mixed therein with an active sludge. This inclusion-immobilized active sludge is allowed to release phosphorus and then returned to the tank 2 for exposure to air.
