Abstract

PURPOSE:To lower the yield point of a steel having a specified compsn. and a specified carbon equiv. while maintaining the mechanical properties on high levels, by quenching and tempering the steel under specified conditions so as to specify the structure and a precipitate. CONSTITUTION:A steel consisting of, by weight, 0.03-0.25% C, 0.03-0.5% Si, 0.20-1.8% Mn, 0.004-0.10% Al, 0.0001-0.005% N and the balance Fe and having <=0.45 Ceq. is quenched from the state of austenite and tempered at <=700 deg.C. By this method, a structure consisting of ferrite having many dislocations obtd. by releasing cementite from martensite during the tempering and of coagulated cementite which does not hinder the transfer of dislocations is formed and a precipitate other than ferrite and cementite is restricted to only AlN, so the yield ratio of the steel can be lowered to <=55%.
