Abstract
PURPOSE:To maintain a bistable state without receiving orientation bearing control power and to obtain a memory effect by providing two sheets of substrates which are coated with oriented films on at least the electrode surfaces thereof and a ferroelectric liquid crystal and using a non-crystalline high polymer contg. a photoisomerization reaction material for at least either of the oriented films. CONSTITUTION:A soln. of {polystyrene+spiropyrane} contg. the spiropyrane as the photoisomerization reaction material at 20.5wt.% by the weight of the polystyrene is coated on the glass substrates 1, 9 having the ITO electrodes 2, 8 and is dried in such a manner that the thickness of the oriented films 3, 4 after driving is 1,000Angstrom . After the oriented films 3, 4 on the glass substrates 1, 9 are rubbed by a cotton cloth, the substrates are stuck to each other via beads spacers 6 in such a manner that the rubbed directions are reversed and paralleled from and with each other. The periphery except the point to form an injection port is sealed by a sealing resin 5. The ferroelectric liquid crystal 7 is then injected into the element. After this element is held for 30min at 72 deg.C, light from a halogen lamp is projected via a UV cut filter and the element is slowly cooled down to room temp.; thereafter, the injection port is sealed. The bistable state is thereby maintained and the memory effect is obtd. without receiving the orientation bearing control power.
