Abstract

PURPOSE:To maintain a bistable state without receiving orientation bearing control power and to obtain a memory effect by providing two sheets of substrates which are coated with oriented films on at least the electrode surfaces thereof and a ferroelectric liquid crystal and using a non-crystalline high polymer contg. a photoisomerization reaction material for at least either of the oriented films. CONSTITUTION:A soln. of {polystyrene+spiropyrane} contg. the spiropyrane as the photoisomerization reaction material at 20.5wt.% by the weight of the polystyrene is coated on the glass substrates 1, 9 having the ITO electrodes 2, 8 and is dried in such a manner that the thickness of the oriented films 3, 4 after driving is 1,000Angstrom .
