NEW MATERIAL:A propionic acid derivative of the formula (R is alkyl). EXAMPLE:Ethyl 3-(2,5-dihydro-oxo-3-furan)propionate. USE:It is used as a synthetic intermediate of 3-(2,5-dihydro-2-oxo-3-furan)propionic acid which has antiulcerative and liver-protecting actions. PREPARATION:For example, 2-phenylsulfinyl-7-butyrolactone is allowed to react with an acrylic acid ester in an organic solvent such as ethyl ether, in the presence of a base such as sodium hydroxide at -20 deg.C- the boiling point of the solvent.
