Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a medium having a high reliability by forming a protective film consisting of a monomolecular film which consists of carbon as an essential component and contains a bonding atom on a recording layer and chemically boding the oxygen atom on the recording layer and the bonding atom of the protective film. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic recording layer 2 formed by sputtering vapor deposition, etc., is formed on a medium substrate 1. A silane surfactant which consists of the carbon as the essential component and contains the silicon as the bonding atom is thereafter absorbed over the entire surface thereof by a chemical absorption method to form the protection film 3 of the monomolecule consisting of the silane surfactant thereon. Since a natural oxide is formed on the surface of the metal deposited by evaporation as the magnetic recording layer, the oxygen and the silicon are chemically bonded and the protective film is securely formed on the surface. The protective film 3 which consists of the monomolecular film 4 of the silane surfactant, is extremely thin, has no pinholes and has a uniform thickness is thus made into the much stronger film. The efficiency of the head for recording and reproduction is thereby improved and noises are decreased.
