Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of a small arc between the front layer of slag and the wall of a mold by adding Al as a deoxidizing agent into the molten slag and exchanging part of the molten slag with the renewed slag of a specific compsn. at each melting of the prescribed amt. of the consumable electrode. CONSTITUTION:A consumable electrode is melted by the Joule heat of the molten slag consisting of CaF2-Al2O3-CaO and the globules dropped in the molten slag are laminated and solidified in the mold. Al or wire chip or the like essentially consisting of Al is intermittently added as the deoxidizing agent to the molten slag in the mold in this electroslag refining method. Furthermore, part of the molten slag is replaced with the renewed slag of the compsn. consisting of 60-90% CaF2 and 10-40% CaO at each melting of the prescribed amt. of the consumable electrode. The compsn. of the molten slag is thereby hardly changed and the erosion of the mold is not generated in spite of the long-period melting and, therefore, the ingot having good quality is obtd.
