Abstract

PURPOSE: To refine the titled Ti-contg. steel having a sound casting surface in a stable and high Ti yield by selecting the optimum composition of slag and using a steel electrode contg. Al besides Ti.
CONSTITUTION: Slag 3 contg., by wt., 40W60% CaF2, 10W30% CaO, 5W25% Al2O3 and 5W25% TiO2 is melted and allowed to stay on a molten steel pool 4 in a water cooled steel mold 1. A steel electrode 2 contg. ≥0.10wt% Al besides Ti is connected to one pole of a pwer source 6, and the lower end of the electrode 2 is immersed in the slag 3. The other pole of the source 6 is connected to solidified steel 5 through the bottom plate. By supplying an electric current in theis state, the electrode 2 is melted from the lower end in the hot molten slag 3, and the molten steel is solidified from the bottom of the pool 4. By this method steel 5 having a sound casting surface and a low inclusion content can be manufactured stably in a high Ti yield.
