Abstract

The ingots are produced according the principle of the growing ingot by fusing off consumable electrodes in short water-cooled sliding moulds by means of electron beams, plasma, an electric arc or especially also in electroslag refining plants, wherein the metal level in the mould is first lowered by at least 1 mm by a forward stripping stroke at a rate of at least twice the ingot build-up rate and then raised again by an immediately following return stroke, which is less than the forward stripping stroke, at a rate of at least twice the ingot build-up rate, and the forward stripping stroke and the return stroke are mutually matched in such a way that the level of the molten metal in the mould is held between two permissible limit zones, a brief standstill being possible between each return stroke and each subsequent forward stripping stroke. <IMAGE>
