Process for the electrical remelting of metals
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
comes into contact with the disc 8. The mold 5, which is open on both sides, is placed on the plate 8 and filled with the flux used in electrical remelting, and electrical energy is supplied to the system from a power source 10. The arcing between the disc 8 and the consumable electrode 9 melts a certain amount of the flux and furthermore the flux melts and the consumable electrode melts under the influence of the heat developed in the liquid flux during the passage of current.
On the inner surface of the mold, the flux forms a thin, semi-solidified crust, on which the surface of the electro-slag block is created. Depending on the progress of the melting process, the consumable electrode is advanced downward with the aid of the carriage 2 movable by means of a drive 11, and the like. zw. With a speed V which is determined by given electrical data of the remelting process.
The consumable electrode continues to melt with the mold at rest until the bath level has reached about half the height of the mold. The mold is then shifted upwards at the speed V, which corresponds to the increase in the speed of the length of the block 13 or the metal level in the mold rises. A decrease or increase in the lifting speed of the mold compared to the speed at which the ingot grows causes disturbances in the remelting process.
The mold 5 is moved with the aid of the carriage 4 and a drive 12, which consists of a direct current motor with speed control and a gear, and the remelting process is carried out with the consumable electrode and mold moved relative to one another.
The block 13 itself remains immobile during the remelting.
The process is ended after the consumable electrode has melted.
By moving the mold and the consumable electrode in the opposite direction during the remelting process, blocks of relatively small height can be produced with molds, the length of which is significantly greater than the height of the molds.
The method according to the invention will be illustrated using a specific example, namely the electrical slag remelting of ball bearing steel.
The consumable electrode made of ball bearing steel, which was clamped in the electrode holder of the system, was 200 mm in diameter and 7.0 m in length. A disk made of ball bearing steel 250 mm in diameter and 50 mm thick was inserted into the mold, 300 mm in diameter and 1.2 m high, and an amount of 60 to 80 kg of a flux consisting of 70% CaF2 and 30% A120s was poured onto it .
After connecting the system to a power source, an arc was initially created between the disk and the electrode and the slag began to melt. After 10-20 minutes the arc disappeared and the flux was completely melted and the electrode melted off by the heat generated in the slag when the current passed through. Depending on the melting, the electrode was advanced downwards at a speed V which was necessary to maintain a current between 6500-7500 A. After a block of 600 mm height had arisen after about 1.5 h, the mold was started to be raised at a speed of 0.53 to 0.55 m / h. The upward movement of the mold was maintained until the consumable electrode had melted as much as possible.
The result was a block weighing 1.5 to 1.7 t and about 3 m in length, that is to say with a length that is almost 2.5 times the height of the mold.
