Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an electrode material with little hydrogen generated at the time of a charge and high current efficiency and high cell conductivity by using carbon fibers with the relative integrated intensity of the nitrogen element/carbon element determined by the ESCA surface analysis and the specific resistance specified. CONSTITUTION:Carbon fibers with the relative integrated intensity of the nitrogen element/carbon element determined by the ESCA surface analysis of at least 0.04 and the specific resistance of 2X10<-3>OMEGA.cm or less are used as the electrode material of a redox flow battery. The carbon fibers with such surface characteristic are obtained by the electrolysis processing in the aqueous solution of ammonia or the like using carbon fibers as a positive electrode or the plasma processing in the atmosphere of ammonia or the like, for example. The introduced nitrogen elements exist on the surfaces of carbon fibers as the amino amide group, and the deoxidation reaction is accelerated by such carbon fiber electrode. The generation of hydrogen gas on a negative electrode at the time of a charge is thereby suppressed, and the current efficiency and electric conductivity can be improved.
