Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the filtration efficiency of a membrane structure for liquid filtration by forming liquid filtration membrane parts on all the liquid- passing sides of partition walls constituted by a substrate part, and regulating the flow resistance of the substrate part at a value in a specific range, said value being far smaller than that of the liquid filtration membrane parts. CONSTITUTION:An organic binder and a plasticizer are added to a fine powder of a ceramic material such as alumina, and the resulting mixture is kneaded and extruded through a die having many slits. The extrusion-formed mixture is dried and then calcined, thereby obtaining a substrate 11a. Then, liquid filtration membrane parts 11b are formed, for example, by heating and hydrolyzing aluminum isopropoxide, adding nitric acid to the resulting hydrolyzate to prepare a sol containing liquid, coating the sol on the circumferential surfaces of the many through-holes of the substrate part 11a, and then drying and calcining the applied sol. Thus, a liquid filtration membrane structure is obtained in which the substrate part 11a has a pure water permeability at least 20 times that of partition walls 11 and the liquid filtration membrane parts 11b have an average pore diameter of 10-10,000Angstrom .
