Abstract

PURPOSE:To achieve a higher detection accuracy, by varying the direction of linear polarization according to the angle of inclination of a main refractive index to axis at an irradiation position of a light transmitting sheet-shaped product to low noise attributed to optical anisotrophy. CONSTITUTION:A laser light from a linearly polarized laser oscillator 2 is made to scan with a polygon mirror 4 via a Faraday elment 3 and passes through, for example, a polyethylene/terephthalate film 1 to be incident on a light receiver 6. The angle of rotation of linear polarization of the element 3 is controlled with a controller 5 to synthesize with a detector 7 arranged on a scan line. Then, an angle beta of incidence of the laser light into the film 1 is set to be roughly an angle of polarization so as to reduce interference to a minimum possible between a light transmitted once through the film 1 and a transmission light reflected on both sides, surface and back of the film 1 thereby reducing noise attributed to optical anisotrophy.
