Abstract
PURPOSE:To increase the optical coupling efficiency between an optical fiber and a photodetecting element and to facilitate mounting operation even when the photodetection surface of the photodetecting element is made small by forming the end surface of the optical fiber so that the cut surface is a nearly hemispherical surface has a desired tilt to the axis. CONSTITUTION:The projection-side end surface 15 is machined so that when the optical fiber 10 is mounted on a circuit board 5, the cut surface 15A of a spherical surface slants downward at a desired angle to the axis and the hemispherical surface is convex obliquely and upward. A light signal propagated in the optical optical is therefore reflected by the projection-side end surface toward the photodetection surface 3. In this case, the projection-side end surface 15 is the nearly hemispherical surface, so the light reflected by the projection-end surface 15 travels in such a direction that it is converged on the photodetection surface 3, and never spreads in the outward direction of the photodetection surface 3. Namely, even when the photodetecting element 1 and photodetection surface 3 are made narrow, the optical coupling efficiency between the optical fiber and photodetecting element increases.
