Abstract

PURPOSE:To make a discharge part easily heatable at the time of glow discharge, letting thermionic emission come so easy and shorten the time of transition to arc discharge by constituting a device from a cathode which is attached to a tube body for a discharge lamp and has an electrode part formed by a semiconductor ceramic and the discharge part, and making resistivity in the discharge part of the said cathode higher than that in the electrode part. CONSTITUTION:A discharge lamp electrode consists of a cathode 2 using a semiconductor ceramic to be set up in a tube body for a discharge lamp and a lead wire 4 which is connected to a sealing support part 3 sealing and supporting this cathode 2 inside the tube body 1, and in and around an end 1a of the tube body 1 and the cathode 2, and extended to the outside via the sealing support part 3. In this cathode 2, resistivity in a discharge part 2b is set to be higher than that in an electrode part 2a. Thus, the resistivity of the discharge part 2b of the cathode 2 is made higher than that of the electrode part 2a whereby the discharge part 2b is easy to be heated at the time of glow discharge, thermionic emission comes so easy, and the time of transition to arc discharge is shortened. In addition, arc discharge starting voltage can be lowered.
