Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a nickel electrode having high active material utilization and high capacity by using a nickel electrode prepared by applying a mixture of a nickel active material such as Ni(OH)2 and NiOOH, nickel fibers or fibrous material whose part of surface is covered with nickel, and a binder to a substrate. CONSTITUTION:A flat-shaped electrode substrate such as a metal mesh is used. Metallic cobalt, oxide or hydroxide of cobalt is added to a nickel active material to increase the utilization of the active material. Part of the surface of a core material such as a metal, for example, iron, carbon, ceramic such as glass, or nylon is covered with metallic nickel to form a conductive core material. A binder insoluble to an electrolyte such as polytetrafluoroethylene and polyvinyl chloride is mixed with a nickel active material and the conductive core material, and they are kneaded and applied to the flat-shaped electrode substrate. By using conductive fibers, a highly conductive network is formed, the conductivity within the active material is increased, the peeling off of the active material from the substrate is prevented, and the flexibility of the electrode is also increased.
