Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an alumina refractory having excellent moldability and surface smoothness and useful as a substrate for IC, etc., by mixing particles of electromelted alumina and electromelted mullite with calcined alumina and clay particles at specific ratios and forming and sintering the mixture. CONSTITUTION:A mixture is produced by mixing (A) 45-85wt.% of particles of electromelted alumina and electromelted mullite containing <=5wt.% of particles of <=44mum in diameter, (B) 10-40wt.% of calcined alumina having an agglomerate particle structure composed of secondary particles having an average particle diameter of 15-75mum which are agglomerates of primary particles of 1-5mum in diameter and (C) 3-15wt.% of clay particles having particle diameter of <=5mum and containing <=1wt.% in total of other components excluding Al2O3 and SiO2. The obtained mixture is pressed to a prescribed form and sintered at about 1,700 deg.C to obtain the objective alumina refractory.
