Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an agent for reducing blood viscosity, effective in improving the fluidity of blood itself flowing through a vessel and remedying ischemic cerebral diseases caused by microcirculation disorder, etc., by using a phthalide derivative which is a component of SENKYU (rhizome of Cnidium officinale) as an active component. CONSTITUTION:The objective agent contains a compound of formula I (R1 is H, OH or methoxy; R2 is propyl or butyl), e.g. 4-methoxy-3-propylphthalide as an active component. The compound of formula I is administered at a rate of preferably 30-400mg daily in several divided doses in the case of oral administration. The compound can be produced by converting a compound of formula II into a compound of formula III with an aldehyde in the presence of a base, treating the obtained compound with an acid and, as necessary, further demethylating the product.
